Yep... will say everything else looked cleanly built and assembled so far. Would like to give them the benefit of the doubt that it was a defective block, but will have to give them a chance to make right with a replacement.
At this point I don’t even care about the extra time to pull and...
The service tech at ATK started a claim and I’ll have to have a support tech come out to the house to inspect it it sounds like when I have a day off work. Mechanically everything was running tip top.
Only other complaint so far on this block is the paint coating they apply. From the little...
Well... a few weeks in and a major issue with the new block.
The bolts didn’t shear as many XJ owners have had on old blocks, but rather the whole block casting mount had cracked on all three bolt locations. Used new bolts of proper factory spec and torqued to spec as well. Only thing I can...
Thanks always for the insight. Found the valve noise issue and sure enough it was something small that was done with the engine apart.Someone gave me a hand and had attempted to hammer out the bellow of the valve cover to clean under. Apparently it never got hammered quite all the way in once he...
Fabbed up a little aluminum injector loom in place of the brittle oe pos. Rounded all the edges and cut slots to ensure the wire wouldn’t get scored or worn.
Finals at school this week then I’ll have the chance to fix a last few things and get the XJ on the road. Few pics of my current setup.
Cowl intake with a 7” air aid filter. I think “ericsxj” was the writeup I followed a while back. Modified it’s bit to my own and welded on an air fitting to...
Well... found the no start issue.
Timing, spark, gas, ground. Had to be one.
Gas pressure sat at 45-50psi in the rail
Viper coil installed and gapped spark plugs again as well as check all connections.
Cleaned up and resecured grounds.
And the last little (big) thing that made the...
Interesting, will think more on this. Heard mostly of complaints in high moisture environments and that’s not much an issue in So Cal. Haven’t heard issues on the heat cracking so soon but makes sense.
My wrap stops where the header meats the front pipe so it will dissipate heat at the flange...
Pictures have slowed since I’ve been working off and on to finish everything. Was hoping to get this done before I hit finals weeks...
Anyway made a tool out of 1/2” stock round bar to fit the oil pump and prime it. Just kept spinning and spinning, pumpingair and no oil pressure. So... dropped...
Cranked out some time on the XJ again last night after school. Went non stop through 2am but it’s most of the way there with gaskets, seals and torqued down bolts.
Few electrical things left and then to prime the oil pump and do the engine break in.
Didn’t clean the alternator up as I’ll be...
Some slower progress, but side tasks between work and school the past few days.
Wire wheeled the full intake to shine it up and cleaned inside thoroughly with dawn soap and then throttle body cleaner until the oil grunge was gone.
Water Pump and Thermostat on and gaskets up as well as the oil...
Fair enough. Will say the same on Jasper, and honestly could have gotten it through a buddy’s truck shop I’m sure but the ATK was less hassle all around.
I’ve done the filter and fluid recently and just replaced the torque converter and shift/lockup solenoids to see if it will fix my P0740...
I checked out jasper back when I was looking around. They seemed on par with ATK from what I perceived, but the whole process seemed less easily available to an individual/residential and more wanting to deal through a shop. ATK was readily available to be ordered through 4wheel parts, and they...
Will do. So far everything looks in top top shape. The kit came with a full gasket kit and oil pump I bought or reused everything else.
In my case having a block with 236k on it and a previous owner that let it overheat and didn’t know much on maintenance I was risky to put more money/time into...
New ATK engine is in!
Too busy working on it to post but have snapped a few pictures along the way I’ll post up when it’s done.
Went overkill on the cleaning while it was apart. Lowered the transmission and stripped/primed/bedlined the full underbody and engine bay. All aluminum mounts, heat...
New ATK engine is in.
Too much cleaning and prep past few days. Whole underbody stripped and primed then bedlined. Full engine bay. Scotch brited and polished all the aluminum pieces. VHT paint on all the steel/high heat. All bolts replaced with grade 8.
Figure if not now then when will it...
I like the idea of the rack, the water along the rail has always scared me for weight distribution as in an offcamber or swerving situation that’s force pulling the roof right towards the ground.
Thought about fitting a shower pipe in the underbody or between one of the bumpers? Just my...
Put in the new torque converter today while the engine is out. Also removing and redoing all of the wire harness looms and masking tape over the full new looms.
Going overkill to keep these weather tight and ready to go decades more. Inspect all insulation, 3M heat rated tape down to the...
Yanked the 4 litre today from the jeepagon XJ. Overhauling everything while I’m in here and putting in a remanufactured ATK crate engine next week.
