I am looking forward to seeing more of the State Park. Also, I would have loved for you guys to see Palo Pinto Road and the loop through the Davis Mountains. Both are incredible. Hate we were limited on time.
Palo Pinto Road
Davis Mountains
You can get the backcountry permits 24 hours before. In BBSP you can get anytime.
No gas needed in the NP....the store at Panther Junction fuel pumps are open 24 hours.
My next trip to the State Park.....I will take gas. That place is at the end of the world. I did not need it for our...
Fireman.....it was a trip of a lifetime that is for sure. We were all missing our kids after watching her have so much fun.
One thing of note, when you are getting out of the area in Marfa you have a couple of egress routes that will take you home.
I recommend going due north via Fort Davis...
The trails we did in BBRSP could be done in a Suburban. There are lots of hard trails there that you would want to avoid. Lots of pin striping too so be prepared.
If you get to Marfa on a Sunday most everything is closed but the pizza joint across from Family Dollar is legit and open.
The drive out of BBRSP is epic. The calichi road is wide and smooth. I hit 80 mph on a few stretches and it was awesome. The hills floated and we spaced as not to eat dust.
We hit pavement about 10 miles south of Marfa and early dinner on Sunday......
.......but first, we had to...
This trail sign should be mobile so I could put it on EVERY trail I had done in the last week.........
Funny story, when we came in on Saturday, the hot park lady told us that there would be marathon runners in the park on Sunday and to watch out for them.
This group was getting attacked (or...
I heard over the radio that the first guys had reached NOWHERE. I got an empty feeling in my stomach knowing that when I got to NOWHERE, everything after would take me back to reality. We were 1300 miles into our expo and about 1000 miles from home.
Someone has a great sense of humor...
I went back to Big Bend and added the State Park....
Here is the report

This mine is cool......not really the mine as much as the vantage point from the mine. You really feel like you are at the end of the world up there.
Our gang......
The mine itself is capped off but you can climb on it and look down forever. This thing was active during the Cold War...
After wandering around camp for an hour, we hit the trail to the Uranium mine south of camp. The drive up got a bit more technical. We all used 4 low for the climb.
There were two mines. One was close to the road with no way to turn the trucks around at the top. We just admired it...
The next morning Fireman kicked up the campfire with the remaining wood and Andy pulled the espressos
Andy noticed that there were hundreds of birds around the well drinking. We snuck around and watched and took pictures
So many of the windmills have been converted to solar now
So, the absolute most awesome part of the Big Bend Ranch State Park is that they allow ground fires.
We all packed in a bundle of wood for the night and the next morning. When I go back to the State Park, I will bring my M416 with fuel and wood so I can support about 3 days of wheeling this...
We arrived in camp just a little over an hour after we left Ranch HQ. The road was a bit slower, but for the most part we made real good time. There were 4 LOW trails splintering off the main trail we were on just about every mile. It seems like the wheeling, hiking and biking opportunities...
Just like some of you reading this story, I was dying to see Big Bend Ranch State Park. Years ago, on my 3rd trip to Big Bend, my friend Price Burdine regaled me with stories of hiking for days to the center of El Solitario, an ancient volcano crater, that is in the NE part of the park. Now...
