Well the link is not working for me but I think I know which van you are talking about if it is the green one with all the land rover bits.
To be honest I was a little disappointed when that van was posted on another forum.
For starters I was hopping to be the first solid axle swapped Vanagon...
I tend to frequent our 3 local breweries; Jackie O's, Little Fish and Devils Kettle but as far as other bars go the newly rebuilt Union (after the fire), Tony's and the Smiling Skull are about the only other places I go.
That is precisely the problem.
Once the engine is in the back and the transfer case is being fed from the back, the outputs will now be spinning counter clockwise when viewed from the front.
The problem is that I need them to spin clockwise as they would in a normal front engine...
Ok I had a guy (or girl maybe? I don't know) on Ih8mud measure their pinion angle and it came out to about 5.5* so that sounds like a pretty good place to start.
According to this image from Slee it looks like the stock caster is about 3*
I think I am going to carry on with my plan as...
This is going to be wordy so i appologize in advance.
Can anyone tell me what the stock front pinion angle is on an FJ80?
I'm going to be up front.
I am not building an FJ80 but I am using the front axle from one.
However, I need to rotate the pinion down for my use.
This will require that I...
Sort of a slow going in the old garage this weekend.
Managed to get a couple things started then was short some things I needed so I had to stop.
The plan was to get the front axle cut and ready to turn.
However I was unable to get the pipe cutter I was hoping to get Friday so I did what I...
Yeah I think I can re-route some things under the van and fab up a pair of tanks.
there would be one on both sides just inside each frame rail.
It also helps that I am building a sub-frame that is dropped a bit so I can mount the transfer case and control arms.
just eyeballing it and a little...
Ok back to the build.
As I mentioned it could be possible to reverse the rotation of the Subaru auto.
I am carrying on with the build with that being the plan.
I bought another front housing that will be getting most of the factory brackets cut off and prepped for a steering knuckle cut and...
There is a company that makes an adapter that bolts the TDI to the Subaru 5 Speeds.
With a few additions I could likely make it work with the 4EAT auto that I am using.
The plan from the get go has always been a TDI Vanagon but I already have the complete Subaru drivetrain so I have decided...
The plan is to run a radius arm set up front and rear with plain old coil springs and shocks.
I understand that they are not the most flexible of designs but they do well enough that all of the best overlanders in the world use it.
The Discovery 2 even has it front and rear.
It will likely...
Some of you may have tuned into my old thread about the upgrades to my 85 Vanagon tin top.
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/124380-Bruce-Vanner!-Long-Slow-Vanagon-Transformation
In reality my build took a turn and I skipped right to the fun/more involved part of my build, the 4x4...
I know it was a while back and perhaps I missed it but what precisely was involved with changing the LT230 flanges to bolt up the toyota driveshafts?
I noticed you used some 9" pinion flanges with multiple bolt patterns but what else needed done to make it work?
I also need to mate the land...
Not to much building to report yet but this update contains a lot of important info.
First off I have been racking my brain trying to sort out this axle thing.
I may have mentioned that, since my engine is in the rear, I would have to flip the diffs to make everything move the right...
I am curious what this bender will cost when it is all said and done.
I have been on a budget tool buying binge lately.
Just enough to get me by in my little shop and this would be right up my alley.
Cool build by the way.
Man.
I am starting to think I maybe should have spent a little extra cash an purchased some cleaner axles.
Of course I would still have had to remove all the factory brackets but cleaning up the housing itself would not have been as time consuming.
Either way I am making a little progress...
Yeah I am not ruling anything out at the moment.
I have even seem some pretty crazy linkage set ups and even a typical saginaw type that was mounted vertically.
Then the main steering column simply ran in to what is now the top of the box.
I may be able to work something like this with an FJ80...
Yeah I have been checking out a lot info on steering boxes lately.
I have a limited supply of vertical space so the box can't be very tall.
I also need to take into account that the box will be flipped front to back and the steering shaft will be coming in from the front of the vehicle.
I...
Well I got a couple more packages.
Found a pretty good deal on some 235/85R16 General Grabber AT2s.
Had them mounted on some 16x7 FJ Cruiser Steelies.
They are a fair bit bigger than the stockers.
Its going to have to sit a fair bit higher to clear these babies.
I plan to keep it as...
