Are you dead set on the Firestik? I prefer a flexible metal whip over a stiff fiberglass antenna that requires a spring to save it from getting busted. Something like this...
When I switched vehicles I went from a roof mounted NMO antenna to a fender mount (same antenna, same radio, same model vehicle) and definitely noticed a difference in TX and RX distance. Some of the repeaters I could barely make it into to begin with I now have problems making it into. Wasn't a...
1) Sure, depending on how high you have stuff stacked on the rack and how much of the antenna is blocked by the stuff on the rack it could cause issues with transmit/receive in that direction.
2) Shorter is best and I would say from roof to frame is too long. If you ground to the frame you may...
Martin,
Have you participated in Field Day? It's the last full weekend in June and may be a way to keep your interest peaked through mid year. You may find another avenue within ham radio that you may want to explore (Satellite contacts using your HT, HF, fox hunting, etc). I enjoy helping set...
So you are covered (Licensed) but you are going to throw your buddies under the bus. :coffeedrink:
Don't take that the wrong way, it just amused me. :D
FT-8800r for VHF/UHF, UV-5r with Mobilink TNC and Android Tablet for APRS, and Kenwood TS-480sat for HF.
Browning BR-180 (x2) for VHF/UHF and APRS, and a couple of MJF "hamtennas" for HF. 10m, 20m, and 40m antennas giving me capability on 6m, 10-12m, 15m, 20m, and 40m.
Per a tech article on Pirate4x4.com
"However, before Rugged ship you a radio, they also program it with a "standard" set of frequencies and channel names. For example, for Ultra4 / King of the Hammer's racing, commonly used frequencies include (in MHz):
151.490 - KOH Race Ops – Used internally...
I will be getting these to do my mics as well. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D0N79K2/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2UUJF0X50SZKL&coliid=I35HWN8315U7OG
You can make a basic radio do APRS by adding an external TNC. I use a mobilinkd TNC with Bluetooth which connects to my Android tablet (or phone) running APRSDroid. The tablet/phone provides the GPS and also displays the info on a map/list. I currently use a Baofeng HT for APRS with an...
If you can afford a dual band radio I would get one. If it has cross band repeat it would allow you to use an HT while on foot, which may be a good option to have depending on where your adventures take you.
When I was first looking at mobile radios I also thought a 2m only rig would be fine...
To me it's size and being USB chargable is about the only thing it has going for it, though a UV5R isn't all that big either.
Only 16 channels, only 2 watts, and only UHF... for the price I would get another UV5R.
But if they fit your need then they are perfect.
The addition of the 220 Mhz band may be good for you and your travelling companion in the four wheeler to talk to each other with out being bothered by others. But wouldn't plan on using it to make contact with many other people otherwise. I wouldn't pay the additional for it.
Kind of like...
The general offroader and the offroad industry for that matter doesn't understand radio/antenna theory. They throw a 2' antenna on a powder coated mount bolted to a spare tire carrier, and then wonder why they can barely talk a 1/2 mile.
A mobile GMRS/UHF radio for small group convoy/trail...
When I originally posted this I was in a 93 XJ but now am in a 00 XJ, at least until my oldest turns 16 then I will be back in the 93....if it's done by then.
This is my current set up in my 00. The 93 may be slightly different as it is a manual trans.
Not the best picture, but you will notice...
IC-2730A (not deluxe) is going for $254.95 after mail in rebate. Granted you have to wait about 6 weeks for the rebate but if you can swing it it may be your best option.

Depends on what is being used where you are and where you plan on going.
When I was first looking at a mobile radio I thought 2m monoband would be fine as it was considerably cheaper (new). Then I found that there was a linked repeater system covering the eastern half of the state....on 70cm. A...
A company called Beartooth was trying to come out with a case for your smart phone that would transmit on regular radio frequencies such as FRS, MURS, 2m ham, etc. I thought this was such a better idea than the GoTenna as it allowed you to talk to others on regular radio vs GoTenna users only...
