Taking My HAM Technician Exam Soon

That's a relative question, depends on what electrical and maybe math knowledge you had previously. I know people who have had a difficult time passing the Tech test, (maybe they didn't study enough?) yet I know a guy that passed the Tech so quickly the VE's thought he didn't know the test had...

    CB radio suggestions

IMO it would be better with a few more watts and I would upgrade the antenna if I got one. It is not able to do repeaters either. It also requires a license ($65 for 5 years, covers immediate family, no test) This is basically what Australia and New Zealand have gone to as the new CB. Not a...

Taking My HAM Technician Exam Soon

Congrats on your interest and I am sure you will have no problem passing. Since you mentioned bad weather, where are you located?

    CB radio suggestions

Also if you are looking for a way to run the power wires for the CB to the battery, there is a hold just behind the side panel of the dash on the passenger side. Comes out on top of the inner fender right next to the battery.

    CB radio suggestions

The Cobra 75 is popular especially among JK owners. I would suggest an external speaker as well. As far as antennas go, I would suggest a fender mount over a spare tire/tailgate mount. The antenna pictured below is a Browning BR-140-B NMO antenna on a NMO flat fender mount from The Antenna...

HAM radio in 1st Gen Tacoma?

It looks like there may be an area next to the power ports below the dash in front of the shifter that you may be able to mount the control head or at least the speaker. You may have to use a seat bolt mount goose neck for the control head. You can also mount the speaker on either side of the...

HAM radio in 1st Gen Tacoma?

Auto or manual trans? I don't have any first hand experience but looking at pictures the auto may have a place or two to mount something.

Pics of mobile HF antenna installs

Thank you. My trail Jeep has the vhf/uhf antenna on the roof and I can tell a difference but I didn't want to drill holes in this one...or the new one. The vhf/uhf antenna that appears to be "centered" on the Jeep in the picture is actually on the passenger rear corner on a crossbar I made to...

Pics of mobile HF antenna installs

Not a big cool wheeling rig or a big cool antenna, it's my daily and it gets the job done. I should say it WAS my daily until someone crossed over center and hit me head on. I have a 2000 XJ now but no good pictures of it or the antennas but using the same setup so just imagine this XJ is red...

    General Ham license study suggestions?

I am not a fan of taking practice test until you get it right. This puts the right AND wrong answers in your head. I used the study guides from KB6NU for my Tech and General. Read through them a couple times, went through it once and wrote down what I had problems remembering and read through it...

    FCC Ham radio testing

APRS is typically only found on some VHF radios, so it is typically an add on. APRS is done on a little HF too, but is mostly a VHF mode.

Couple questions on 10m - license, equipment

During the North American QSO party this last weekend I worked stations in CA, WA, and OR on 40 from the 40m hamstick on my Jeep here in Oklahoma. I am sure their stations were doing most of the work, but we made successful contacts none the less. I was even using the tuner because my SWR was...

    FCC Ham radio testing

Most people use it as a tracker, but you can also see other hams around you that are also beaconing APRS. You can message other local APRS users, sent a text message, and a short email. Since it is a data packet it does travel a bit better than voice. With a 4watt HT running APRS through a 19"...

    Cheap generic dual band mobiles?

That is likely the 10w unit, not much better than an HT with an external antenna. Also the Btech 2501 doesn't have an external speaker jack if I remember correctly, though you could add one. The KT-9800 likely doesn't either but I don't know for sure. Not a big deal if you aren't going to use...

    FCC Ham radio testing

Congrats. 2m should be sufficient but it may depend on where you are travelling. I thought 2m would be ok too, until I found that a linked repeater system that covers half of my state is on 70cm. So a dual band mobile it was. Another benefit of a dual band mobile is the ability to cross band...

Couple questions on 10m - license, equipment

I have talked to a ham over 40 miles away on 5 watts with a homemade yagi antenna on a painters pole mast. This is stuff you could carry with you incase of emergency. Or a J-pole and rope to string it up in a tree, a ladder line J-pole folds/rolls up pretty well. Depending on the height of the...

Couple questions on 10m - license, equipment

It's all about whether someone is listening to the frequency that you are on and it never hurts to have more options. I would say get your General license it may turn into more than emergency comms for you and having the ability to use all the frequencies available is a good idea. In a real life...
