    AdventureBuddies Aluminum Offroad Teardrop build

That makes sense. I think I'll disconnect the springs at one end and lower the frame to the right spot so I know where to put the bumpstops. Then I'll reattach the springs and lift the frame until the springs are at full drop and measure that distance. Is there any science to what the angle of...

    AdventureBuddies Aluminum Offroad Teardrop build

Thanks. Next step is to weld on shock mounts and install shocks. Then I'll start the interior finish since it's an empty shell right now. Does anyone have any tips for determining shock length?

    AdventureBuddies Aluminum Offroad Teardrop build

It's been a few months, but I finally had a little time on Friday to pull the trailer out of storage and work on it some more. I haven't really used it yet, except for towing it out to AZ for the expo. On the highway it was amazing - no feedback or sway and it only cost me about 1mpg vs not...

Trailer power - one BIG battery or two small ones?

That makes sense about the discharge or two vs one. The battery in question is an AGM though not a lead acid, so I don't know if that matters. Also, I've heard that AGM batteries can be mounted on their sides - anyone know if that's true?

Trailer power - one BIG battery or two small ones?

I have one of the Sears Platinum (Odessy) group 31 batteries in my 80 as the aux battery. It's a real monster. I now am ready to buy the battery for my new trailer build and can't decide: Group 31 - $265, 75lbs, 205 min reserve capacity Group 34 - $205, 53lbs, 135 min reserve capacity The...

    AdventureBuddies Aluminum Offroad Teardrop build

Thanks. It is quite substantial. Seeing it sitting there it seems so big and tall with no weight to compress the springs. I calculated that the "extra" weight of the steel vs a more minimalistic design adds about 100lbs to the overall weight of the trailer. For me it was worth it to overbuild a...

    AdventureBuddies Aluminum Offroad Teardrop build

By tomorrow I'll have a rolling chassis. Just need to wire up the lights, install the rear tire swingout on the spindle, and install the water tanks. Looks like I'll be towing it to Expo (though the interior will be empty except for a mattress). I'm very pleased with the OME springs so far...

    AdventureBuddies Aluminum Offroad Teardrop build

Yeah, just a bit. I have some pretty ambitious kitchen pullout ideas that require a little space and I wanted to preserve at least 7' of interior length for sleeping. I don't think those inches will change it's behavior on the trail.

156" is the length of the primary frame with tongue. However, the center "tube" protrudes an additional 6" in the back to accomodate a finished rear bumper/tire carrier and 4" in the front to take the Max Coupler so the total length of everything is 166"

    AdventureBuddies Aluminum Offroad Teardrop build

Progress! Got my Max Coupler from AT today. Springs, axle, rear spare tire carrier already here and all manner of other goodies on their way in the mail - water pump, instant water heater, tanks, etc. Here are some pics of the frame as of yesterday. Can't wait to see it powdercoated and rolling....

I think this is what I'll do with the kitchen pullout. Not sure how to show movement but the sink and stove hinge up so it all tucks away and then slides back into the back of the trailer.

    Myanmar

When I was in Myanmar in 2003 they were not allowing any overland entry into the country. There was a guy who had flown a bicycle in and was trying to use it to move freely within the country and they threw him out. Those generals want tourist dollars, but they want to control what you see and...

    AdventureBuddies Aluminum Offroad Teardrop build

I will leave it white since the LandCruiser is white. I've worked out the weight in my mindbut will have to tweak it once it's built. Most likely all mechanical systems including batteries will be in a special access hole in the back. The back will also have the weight of the spare tire and...

Wow, Google sketchup is very cool. Still getting the hang of it, but I have a working drawing. Can't figure out how to post it though.

    AdventureBuddies Aluminum Offroad Teardrop build

Progress! Today I ordered the axle and springs/hangers and shock mounts. My fabricator started cutting metal as well so I'll be posting up build pics of the frame along the way. Also, a few design changes based on input from everyone including new water tank setup and a longer tongue. I've also...

    AdventureBuddies Aluminum Offroad Teardrop build

Thanks for the input. I have two gas tanks in the LandCruiser for 70gal of gas so I'm covered there. The whole point of the camper type trailer is to go "soft.". Being able to take hot showers and wash dishes freely are part of the soft, easy purpose of towing a trailer for me. So, do I "need"...

Hadn't thought of that - great point. I was thinking of putting a sheet of that white plastic material that is used in marine applications on top of the frame before setting the camper on it to help keep water/mud off of the camper itself. So, now with the potential for electrolysis that sounds...
