Wow, hard to believe you sold the FJ it had to be one of the nicest out there. I can understand the more use out of the Runner though. We do the same with our JK over the CJ. Especially long distances.
Having the same dilemma here. I can't tow the 30'RV with the Jeep so I need a cargo trailer conversion for rustic camping and the big one for the campgrounds.
That is the case with actual trailer tires, not so much on truck tires that are used on trailers. Carlisle trailer tires are one of the worst. A few others share their same tread pattern and are just as crappy. I would bet that 90% of the blow outs you see are due to dry rot and tread separation...

They will be especially if you want the center caps on. May sure you get at least a 2" spacer, when you order the spacer make sure it has a large enough center hole to clear the trailer hub as well. I ordered Spider Trac spacers in a 5 on 4.5" flavor and they didn't clear. I have to have them...
That's the only way to go in my opinion. 2x3 3/16 is the best strength to weight ratio for a trailer frame. A lot of folks waste time messing with the flimsy and worn out frames when a new one can be built stronger and faster.
