    M101A1 Axle

Nice. I didn't realize you could get those big 12" trailer brake drums in 6x5.5; just assumed they were all 8 lug. Should be a pretty bulletproof setup. Here's my previous trailer with spring under axle and old skool GY MTR 245/75R16 tires: It looks like you could fit your 32s with it...

Adapting an SUV IRS for a trailer?

This. It's an idea that makes for good bench racing talk (especially while bored holed up in the house), but doing it for real would probably be a fool's errand. Backyard engineering a cobbled up SUV suspension is going to be a lot more trouble than it's worth and will cost more in the end...

    DIY Offroad trailer build

They are pretty top notch in my experience. I have their custom over-sized M416 fenders on my trailer and like them very much. Another unique and cool thing they offer is specialty sets of trailer leaf springs. They are "regular" trailer springs but much longer and softer than off the shelf...

    M101A1 Axle

Yes that's a good solution as well, just section the fender a little and run skinnier tires. OP wants to run 285 mm wide meats; without one on hand to measure I am guessing there isn't room there to narrow it and fit the wide tires. Simple check with a tape measure would prove it out for sure...

    M101A1 Axle

Take one of you Tacoma wheels off, lay it down on a flat smooth surface like the garage floor. Measure from the floor to the mounting flange of the wheel. Multiply that measurement by 2, add it to the width of the trailer tub at the inner fender wells. That number plus 3" is your starting...

    M101A1 Axle

I did one about ten years ago and used a 5200 LB axle with 8 lug electric brakes. I seem to recall that it was the same diameter as the stock axle so the mounting hardware all swapped over. At the time there was not a huge price difference between the 5200 and 3500 so it made sense to go for...

    Rath's Trailer build - We're done!!!

Shackle angle is relative to an imaginary straight line through the spring eyes, not to vertical. From the photo at least, I think with no weight on it you're about right. On the factory built trailers I have measured the hanger eye to eye dimension is usually around a half inch less than the...

    Suggestions on a build

What's missing, just the brake coupler or are the brakes gone as well? If your brakes are still there I don't see why you couldn't just slap a regular old surge coupler on it to actuate them. I generally prefer electric but there's nothing "wrong" with surge brakes.

    Suggestions on a build

I tried this some years ago and couldn't make it work easily. 12" trailer brakes bolted right on the axle flange but the original surge brake drum didn't work with the electric brake magnets. I then bought standard Dexter trailer drums and new magnets to replace the pair I mangled. Alas...

    Suggestions on a build

That is a tall order. Teardrop style generally implies crawl in sleeping quarters only and an outside galley. I think a good way to get all the amenities you are after would be to slap a 4 Wheel or Alaskan camper in it, or perhaps straight on the chassis in a flatbed configuration with tool...

    M104 trailer

There's a really good reason why most people change the axle... I would check with military truck and surplus vendors like Boyce equipment for wheel/tire stuff. Stockton Wheel in California also does some military lug wheel conversions. They might be able to make a wheel that would accept a...

    M416 new axle help.

you're not in the clear yet, just because you got the nut off doesn't mean the spindle isn't booger-ed up. Once it's disassembled and clean you should be able to assess the situation.

I believe that the iconic shape of the military quarter ton trailers was due to the requirement that it float.

    Sleep 4+dog: Beef up a pop-up?

You're on the right track. It's real easy to sturdy up the cabinets in a pop-up. You need some poplar 1x1 and 1x2, a bottle of Titebond II glue and some quality wood screws. It takes a weekend or less to make them much stronger. I love the idea of a pull out galley, cooking inside is not my...

I like that sign panel material; didn't even know it existed. What are you using for corner trim?

I think he means miter joints vs butt joints. Miters are more work but do give you a little more weld area so yes they can be stronger. Most people seem to prefer the way it looks as well.

Smaller tires. Steel commonly used for trailer chassis building doesn't have that much difference between suitable sizes. For example, 2x2 - .120 is something like 3 lbs per foot and 2x3 - .120 is close to 4. Assuming you use approximately 2 sticks to make a Jeep trailer, the weight...

That trailer will be really stout, maybe even approaching overbuilt. I always enjoy seeing modern interpretations of the iconic U.S. military quarter ton trailers. What's the suspension plan?
