That isn't true. Fluid additives degrade over time and can be replenished, recovering function.

ZF makes these. Their fluid is likely to be a good choice.

Thanks. I prob wouldn't try using actual sliders for sliders even. I expected to see reinforced plastic underneath and was pleasantly surprised to see quite a bit of steel.

I scored a 2015 LR4 HSE dEEEE Lux HD with 37K miles. yay for me. Was planning on taking off the running boards but they look to be surprisingly sturdy . Are they at all effective as sliders?
