The gaskets and heads had a small pitted spot between cylinders #4 and #6. The guy at the machine shop confirmed that it is typical from a slowly leaking head gasket.
I had a machine shop mill the heads, check the valves, and replace the valve seals that came in the gasket set. I also had...
I have had my 2004 4runner for about 2 1/2 years, and it has always had an ongoing issue of losing coolant since I bought it, primarily by overflowing the coolant expansion tank. I replaced the radiator because it had a tiny leak, changed the radiator cap and checked the thermostat. Still I...
I have been looking at fat bikes for a couple years and finally picked up a mukluk 3 on sale. I like that it has so many mounting points built in for adding racks and bottle cages. I'm still waiting for snow, but so far it has still been a blast riding it on the trails. I would be interested...
Check that the radiator or expansion tank is not low on coolant, and that there aren't gurgling water sounds when you first start it (due to air in the heater hoses). I'm about to do the head gaskets on my 04 v6 because it will slowly lose coolant by overflowing the expansion tank even though it...
That episode really helped make it more clear what the Rallye is about; careful navigation and strategic moves to minimize route length while still hitting the checkpoints in the time limits, looks pretty cool! Too bad the girls didn't have bridging ladders for the trench though... ;)
That was definitely an interesting test of our bridging ladders! Our accessories will be in stock as soon as possible, and I've also developed a slightly longer version which is just over five feet. A heavy duty version will also be coming soon suitable for full size trucks and vans. We will...
I really dislike bentonite mud. Not only is it horrible to get stuck in but it is so greasy it doesn't like to wash off. And don't let it dry or it becomes like cement. Good job getting free from it!
I'm so glad that Sakshi was able to help test out my Crux Offroad bridging ladders! I was really pleased with how well the ladders worked in the mud even with street tire shod (and 2wd) vehicles. Also they don't suction down to the mud. We had just finished running several vehicles over them...
I have seen those on Amazon before and always thought what a blatant knock-off they are of Maxtrax. Have you noticed in the picture of the dodge durango in the sand that the front tires are already parked on the mats when the rear tires are spun down? It would be interesting to see some real...
That would defeat the purpose of the vehicle in my case. I'm currently able to tow the travel trailer to Moab and run some trails (ie Golden Spike) with the same vehicle. For non-fourwheeling trips I use the Duramax to tow the trailer.
The regear helps with towing the trailer on the highway...
Last week while near Creede, Colorado I decided to take my wife and kids toward Wheeler Geologic Area. Wheeler is a small area of uniquely sculpted volcanic ash inside the La Garita wilderness area. The road to Wheeler is 10 miles of gravel and about 14 miles of double track trail. Since the...
The one thing I would change with my 4runner would be to have the V8. I tow a camp trailer that's about 4k pounds and the extra torque would be nice. Highway driving in the mountains isn't too bad with the V6 but the 8 would be better. My 4runner does have some extra weight on it though.
In...
I recently began to have issues with my starter, which began shortly after a couple of semi-deep water crossings in Moab. The starter would give a distinct click but nothing else. Luckily the only place it did not evenually start after a few tries was my driveway. As I looked into...
My old 4runner was a 1990 with the 22re and 5 speed. My current 2004 4runner has the V6/automatic. I can tell you that over the course of 2-3 days of 4wheeling in Moab, the old 4runner would still get about 15 mpg while my latest 3 day trip with the 2004 resulted in about 8 mpg. Part of that...
Moab Rim was the last trail of our trip. I had ran it last year to just past the Z-turn but wanted to do the whole thing. Here are a couple clips of the devils crack and Z-turn from last year.
