That's the root issue though... 1000's of low margin vehicles vs 10's of 1000s high margin vehicles (with bells and whistles). the stripper Jeep you describe is great for Uni kids, off roaders, and any motorhome owner with a 5k hitch on the back for a TOAD. My guess is the total addressable...
IMHO the only constant across countries, generations, geopolitical situations is the cost of a beer. You can compare Phoenician era beer to 10th century china to London during WWx or North America in the 70s or today. The cost of a beer vs average wage will tell you how the society is doing.
Fleet trucks aren't really all that profitable per unit is my guess. Stripped down vehicles are a volume play. Consumers aren't a volume play. Toys, bells and whistles sell. And there is margin in those toys bells and whistles. How many times here to you see a post that starts with "I found...
This is good progress for sure. When samsung introduced their 30TB flash drive ~8 years ago, it was the same price as a Honda Accord. So yeah, time (and market volume) will definitely solve some of the cost issues. Having said that, when the volume increases this will be like NiCaD to LiFePO4...
my concern is if I get a screaming good deal but there a no dealers left to update all that software...... But I agree, it's more than just inflation causing prices to go up. That is fixable when sales slow down, demand goes down, supply is up therefore the only fix is lower prices to increase...
Ok everyone stop, this is a great secret area and showing it off here is bad for my privacy ;) Seriously though around Telegraph Cove there are grizzlies as they came over from Knight Inlet, it's not that huge a swim. And you won't see the cougars. They will see you but unlikely you'll see...
There are (were) a couple listed here over the summer. One out in NB and one in AB (I think). Search the classifieds here. I looked hard at those but we decided another route is a better choice for us. Wife vetoed not being able to sit up in bed and read with her tea.... so we look at other...
Your wife is over tents, but are the kids? A good 3 man tent and a "couples" trailer bed might be the goldilocks answer. Or kids sleep in the cap and you and the wife in the trailer.... If you go that way your options open up exponentially.
I'm with you 100%. I hate generators and certainly idling anything. I plan to "over battery" if that's a word and the high idle would be under duress as a last resort. Lots of solar on the roof and plenty of amp hours hopefully means I'll never actually need to high ilde (or genny for that...
High idle diesel and DC-DC might negate that generator need. Plus you'll have room for lots of lithium for overnight AC (etc). Might solve your dual fuel issues.
The only other thing I think I can think of is weight. Gas motor is lighter than a diesel one. Will that mess with your fore and aft weights enough to matter? Probably not but one more small consideration.
Will you take this truck into Mexico where low sulphur might be an issue? If yes, gas. If no then diesel. Because. But either will do just fine. But you know, diesel is cooler than gas and you'll be looked down upon at the campfire ;)
Starlink prices vary wildly. I was just in Borneo and one our guides had his house via Starlink. His cost was around $50 USD per month. So it's about pure ability to pay and competitive market. I don't have a problem with that.
Why not a 2500? Generally speaking the $$ aren't that different but the hardware you get is. On a rainy weekend that extra space will be huge. Regardless the turning radius/break over etc is a huge concern if you go on tight roads. My vote is a 2500 with 8' and call it a day. But it's not...
This spec is huge!
Average 25W, Snow Melt 60W 12-48V 60W
USB PD 100W+ (with Starlink USB-C to Barrel Jack Cable Accessory)
no more 48v to 12v BS to manage around.
100% agreed on adding power lines, what I think needs to happen is better range which needs different battery chemistries. We talk about large fuel tanks to get longer range. Same needs to happen for batteries. IE ~400 mile range is fine but that's ideal super clean range. Not some 5MPH...
