FWIW I posted a similar thread on TE and the response were basically all "you'll be fine unless doing hardcore trails, the IFS is surprisingly durable", etc. (I realise they might be a little biased).
I'm not trying to say anyone is wrong or question their experiences, but it can be hard to...
It sounds we're doing different types of wheeling though. Front lockers are usually on required on difficult to extreme trails, and even then only on a few obstacles. I'm not the type to seek out tough obstacles just for the sake of it. My objective is more "touring'' than hardcore wheeling...
RN I’m on 32s and open diffs, with 5100s, giving a 3” lift in the front, but no diff drop and I still have the stock UCAs.
I do have a TRD axle and front 7.5” clamshell with a Detroit LSD installed, both with 4.88 gears with about 20,000 miles on them. Would you say it’d be advisable to install...
I must’ve been mistaken. Like you said they changed to an 8” diff, but I thought the CVs were a little beefier as well. Perhaps not though.
I’d actually be curious on your opinions on the durability of the coil springs Toyota IFS. Is it worth investing in RCV axles, UCAs, etc.?
I’d think it’d be easier to engine swap an older Pickup or 80 series than to SAS a newer Taco. I really think that frame and undercarriage is a masterpiece on the 80 series.
That is one sweet build. Wow.
I only plan on doing 6-7/10 trails at the most, (like Pearl Pass or Poughkeepsie Gulch at the hardest), and don’t plan to lock the front or go over skinny 33s, so I think I should be OK. There are RCV axles available for my truck for a cool $2500, so that’s always...
Well regardless I think they really beefed up the IFS for the next gen of Tacoma. You are making me regret getting rid of the 80 series though. It just felt like kind of a boat anchor in the woods compared to the Tacoma, which is almost more like a SxS.
I'd agree that these trucks aren't well-suited as heavy-duty rock crawlers (unless SAS'ed). As I said, the grippy sandstone at Moab may also be extra hard on the IFS. These trucks are at home in the woods on slick muddy narrow tracks. It's generally advised not to lock the front diffs on the IFS...
I know this is an old thread, but I keep thinking about this post since you're the only one I've heard saying that the front 7.5" clamshell and 1st gen CVs are so incredibly weak. People on Tacomaworld and elsewhere have said the stock front end actually takes a lot of abuse; plenty of them have...
I had a 97 FZJ80 for nearly a year, and in the end I honestly didn't quite get all the hype around the 80 series. A 100 series is better in every way except for rock-crawling, and if you're doing that, just buy a Jeep or solid-axle minitruck. The 2UZ will get you those million miles without...
Never mind it’s not a solid axle truck so I guess you can’t run spacers on the axles.
So I’ll need wheel spacers. Im not usually a big fan of them thiugh because of safety concerns.
I wanna switch to 265/75/16 tires. Might take off the Tundra calipers too while I'm at it.
I'm undecided what to do with the spare diffs with 4.88s and lockers installed since I'd be over-geared for 31s, but it is enticing to finally have true 4wd on the other hand.

From what I’ve researched the knock sensors don’t effect the engine other than regarding timing a bit so hopefully it safe to drive while I source the parts.
On second though, I think it might be the constant traction of Moab that's really hard on those IFS drivetrains. Plenty of people around here trail their IFS minitrucks without any major issues, but maybe they're better suited to the terrain out east with more slick conditions. If I lived out...
Well honestly the LC was a lot rougher cosmetically than the Tacoma, and the Taco also had a lot more new parts on it, including basically the whole suspension, so I thought that made it a fair trade. From past threads I thought you were more of a minitruck than a LC guy but I could be wrong...
You must think I’m crazy to have traded. But he did give me some extra goodies on top so I bit. I am kind of regretting it now that I have to deal with this knock sensor issue.
Also I have to fight to get it into 1st and R when it’s cold. I’m hoping that’s the Marlin Crawler short throw kit...
I have OME springs and Bilstein 5100s, also 17” rims with the Tundra calipers. I want to get it back to stock if possible. Might try to sell the locked and geared axles as well but I’m not sure what to ask for them.
Well I don’t do much extreme wheeling. But I may eventually end up in an 80 series again if what you’re saying becomes my experience. I plan to keep it light, so maybe that’ll help. Might take the lift off too to reduce stress on the driveline.
