Spent a week in Grand Staircase N.M.
We just spent a week wandering around Grand Staircase N.M.
Fantastic rock formations and geologic features. America's open spaces are just amazing. And it was a lot less populated than some of the better known national parks.
As someone who knows little about off road nav technology, the sheer amount and diversity of content is a bit overwhelming - especially since providers usually consider full disclosure about capability and limits of their content a low priority: true story -
I'm at Overland Expo the other day...
Well, I'll start.
We had a FJ with a high quality RRT. That was a great set up. Used it a bunch. But when bad weather rolled in it was still tent camping - set up or tear down in rain or snow sucked. And it seemed we always had bad weather...
Our set up now- the Fernweh popup camper. It works...
Well, I've got taller tires than stock on the 4.6 so I installed 4.10's. My camper is pretty light - about 1000 pounds so the 4.6 does good. I just don't like it downshifting so much on highway inclines and thought I'd at least explore other possibilities before I put too much work into fine...

So today I test drove 2 GMT 800's. One was a swank 03 GMC 2500 with 6.0 gas 77k miles- the other a 04 Chevy 2500HD Duramax 148k miles. Roughly same price.
The GMC was very nice but didn't feel much more powerful than my F150 4.6.
The Dmax was an nice/average example of a 148k mile truck and...
Another option to consider is a Webasto or Eberspacher heater. They make diesel or gasoline models. Very little electrical draw and use very little fuel. They're small and easy to use. The down side is they can be a bit pricey, but this can be helped by installing the unit yourself.
A little Nevada reconnaissance
Well, it's finally done - I retired and moved to northern Nevada. So we did a little trail riding the other day.
Found the Pony Express trail, saw some wild mustangs and antelope.
Living in Europe was fun while we were there, but we're gonna enjoy...
