A quick oil change to make sure any gunk was out.
The irony was the turbo was running smooth, my friend was safely deposited at the airport to return to the east coast, and I was enjoying a Mon am commute interrupted on the H3 by some unexpected stop and go traffic when the next challenge...
The turbo…
I finally hit the tip over point where time + assistance + desire overcame trepidation. Bringing the best friend in from his off-road park in WV, we set out to ‘bolt on’ this turbo kit.
While not a Land Rover, by any stretch, one can imagine there was a lot of fiddling to get it...
The next big leap would be going turbo…
This was not without significant consideration, but the truth is even trying to keep it light it had picked up some weight for a truck that was never going to have a lot of speed and top end power. Oahu has a lovely highway running through it connected...
Thus far the relative interchangeability between that gen toyota pickup and the Hilux made things easy.
Too easy.
I wanted sliders. I assumed, without measuring, that extended cab pickups and double cab Hiluxes are essentially the same.
That would prove to be a false assumption.
Though...
For bumper choices I knew I did not want tube, which left me between ARB and the Warn. Just for the sake of trying something different (and deferring to what my wife preferred-if we’re being honest, but at least she had an opinion) we went with the warn.
Given exposure to salt water in Hawaii...
Shipped the truck off Oki in May of ‘22 via the slow boat (thank you Jones act) but the price was right. Truck went from Okinawa to mainland Japan, to Korea, to LA, then to Hawaii but it eventually arrived.
JDM car scene in Hawaii is strong these days, mostly centered around Kei trucks/vans...
Two other minor mods before the truck left Japan:
-4 runner console to replace the stock one, gives two cup holders and more space for storage.
Headlight upgrade. Didn’t want to go full LED, thus retained the traditional but upgraded to halogens and upgraded bulbs.
Initial mods
Getting the truck with ~140k on it meant she was barely at 80k miles. Based off condition of the paint and interior, I don’t think she had a hard life up on the mainland. It appears someone used her for mostly show, i.e. the faint outlines of vinyl BFGoodrich, Rancho, and other...
Good day folks-
Spent a lot of time on ExpO awhile back, mostly in the Land Rover section. Then I got sent back overseas, during COVID, into an absurdly busy job so the time to build trucks waned and those trucks didn’t come to Japan with us. Towards the end of the time there the wife finally...
I think your truck will be a great platform. I love our JA11 but wish we had the coils vice leafs. As you probably have noted the bigger challenge for your platform is engine related, they can be finicky. Still, if I could buy another it would be a JA12 or a 22 like yours.

It hit a point where I’d done most of what I wanted to do right around when the winch went on-since then it is has just been working. About to ship it back to the US for eventual duty at our place in West Virginia.
Admittedly part of what stopped the Jimny build was the wife relenting on me...
Early on in my coil conversion my height sensors were still plugged in and I put rods on just to mitigate them having warnings come on from time to time.
That’s a cheaper route than IID-though the IID tool has a lot of other uses.
The electronics are a reality in these trucks, you will find...
Sitting in WV on a bit of a break after a year and a half sprint in Japan, during COVID…
Figured it would be fun to check in and say:
My brake lines corroded. Great. Dealership wants $4-7k (can’t say for sure till they start). So that’s going to wait, and probably go to my Indy vice the dealer...
Piecing together the front end. Low Range Winch base, Cecco Racing brush guard, Warn Axon 55 for a baby winch, and bumperettes from the stock bumper. Mocked up, will take it all off to paint soon.

I have to say for a local runabout it’s fantastic. The cargo area, with the seat removed, would be good for the pups and the overall size of the truck is great for getting around tight streets and such.
We added a panel to the back door. I’d thought first about doing a hard MOLLE panel but with the way the door angles when open it just didn’t look right in mockup. So we went with a soft panel, used rivnuts, and now have some utility pouches on the back. Retention holds straps (mostly roller...
So....
-used the mount kit to mount the bars, no issues with clearance. I don't open Land Rover sunroofs so that was never an issue for me.
-I left the flooring, just cut around it...and continue to add to it and modify it as this pic shows (the mounts for the bars, which are going direct onto...
I owe an update. Work has been work, and quite frankly once we set the truck up we've just been using it so the mods kinda came to a halt. That said there is some stuff to highlight on the interior and such. More to follow.
