The answer to this question depends on how far you plan to go off the road and how much longevity you expect to get out of the chassis.
If you are strongly considering the Transit, I recommend buying a Transit van as a flipper (even a 2wd one), lift it, prowl around on some trails, etc. Coming...

This is my van. I have been using it off and on for the past couple months.
Passenger vans have the rear sway bar so this thing handles great even with the lift.
Motivated to sell by the end of the year, new van is here.

@skirunman there is a RTT option with an inside access noted on the floorplan.
Dinette is the two front seats swiveled around to the second row bench with Lagun table swivel.
A lift could be installed with a call to Van Compass and delivery of parts to the closest tire shop to the Winnebago...

There was so much wind that the Interstate was fairly free of snow.
I was doing 70 ish on the broken snow floor roads and here and there had to slow to 55 where there was a thicker drifted area. The wind was very persistent but I think its pretty manageble.

Its Carpet masking I used specifically to protect the front during transport and this very situation.
I-80 across Wyoming is a pretty wild ride, can be winter there any time of year.
