I'm definitely, through a lot of hard lessons, in the "buy the best you can" camp. A premium for a very, very good truck, that measured in both $$$ and time to find one, is the way I'd go.
Yep, I'm just north of Highway 40 close to St Mary's Hospital.
My Tacoma's around all the time, but it doesn't park on the street so it'll only be seen out and about. Just brought it back from San Diego, where it had been for a month as my drive out and back was split by flying here and there...
Kinda old now (as Rabobank stopped being a UCI pro tour team years ago), but here's the rack system on one of the team cars as spotted outside my hotel in NL one morning. Interesting custom work. I lost count, but I think this might have held seven bikes on top of that Skoda.
As noted above, the racks from 1up USA look interesting. I've seen a few in person, and surprisingly they seem to show more weathering than one might expect from anodized aluminum. Maybe the ones I've seen have led hard lives...

I'm a seriously tall guy...
In my Tacoma -- nuthin'. I'll make do, and the odds are good on that.
In my 1962 Triumph TR3 -- 50:50 ethylene glycol antifreeze:deionized water mix. I keep the jug filled to the brim to minimize pressure changes with altitude or temperature and on that car there's a pretty good chance I'm...
Here's the "tent" I stayed in at Tanda Tula Safari Camp in the Greater Kruger National Park last July. These are up full-time year round. It's a tent in only the loosest sense, of course!
On a more serious note, how about the Cabela's Outfitter series?
These are from police vehicles (French national police, as part of the overall event management at the Monaco Grand Prix over the years), and are probably more designed for crowd control situations than trail damage, but they may give you some ideas.
I'm guessing here, but no, the Tacoma Habitat did not look as easy to open from the outside. Releasing the latches at the front led to a lift of several inches (from the gas struts if I recall correctly how they're mounted). It still needs levering over center to deploy. It might be OK for me...
They highlight it on the toyota.com Land Cruiser page under "Heritage". Alas, this is probably as close as they'll ever get to selling the 70-series here.
No video on opening, alas. The Habitat opened *very* quickly -- Lou unlatched the top, stood inside and pushed it over center to fall open, the gas struts providing control over the speed. Musta taken all of ten seconds. I had to move out of the way as I was under the canopy and on the slight...
