New to APRS or new APRS gear?

Your wife could only reply to your APRS text if she has a license, since the reply would transmit over ham frequency. This post from last fall is quite informative regarding the APRS SMS options: https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/sms-text-and-email-via-aprs-using-aprsdroid.187831/

    Portable 12v inflator recommendations?

I've had a MV-50 since 2004. Purchased at Advance Auto in Colorado Springs on my way through town. The little thing still works great. It is a little slow at high elevation, but does complete the job. I did have to solder a loose wire behind the switch 5 years ago.

    A romp through Western Kansas

Western Kansas? Wait. What? and most notably…..why?!? The undeniable fact is - if you live east of Kansas City and venture to the West for adventure, you get to encounter 420 miles of Kansas on a lovely four lane road. The drive through Kansas is laborious as you power over the...

    Commander/GrandCherokee WK honest reviews

I owned a very nice ’06 WK for about 3 years. It was by far the most comfortable Jeep I had ever had (in comparison to my history with YJ, XJ, TJ, and MJ). The ride was great, the 5.7 Hemi power was phenomenal and the QDII with ELSD seemed to work well. The leather seats were firm yet...

So whose 4Runner rollover in CO is this?

The fatal Cruiser roll was on Cumberland Pass in Gunnison county, which is a well graded road carved into the mountain side. The last I saw was a statement from the sheriff stating the cause of the accident was under investigation but they suspect speed may have been a contributing factor.

What can you tell me about the Jeep comanche

In 1986 there were three engine options: 2.8 V6, 2.5 4cyl and a rare 2.1L Turbo Diesel. If you like to tinker, the only things you should be worried about on a MJ is: rust, tail lights and a working fuel sender. Anything else can be bought new. I have 4 Comanches and love the platform. A...

#USAONDIRT a 5,000 Mile OffRoad Adventure Across America

As you approach Ponca City, I'd recommend stopping at their small airport and eat at Enrique's (if it's not Sunday). Enrique's is a good Mexican restaurant.

#USAONDIRT a 5,000 Mile OffRoad Adventure Across America

I am glad to see you back on the TAT! Your adventure last year was a hoot to follow and I must say, you seem to be having a better run this year. Thanks for the daily updates!

    1986 GMC S-15

Nice work Andrew! The truck and your adventures are great. Getting to do all that with your wife is just icing on the cake. Keep it up, this has been one of the best threads I've read in a while. Thanks for sharing!

    Trailer Hitch Hammock Mount

As a 'hammock camper' this setup looks awesome. Is there enough room on the vehicle side of the stand to hang a tarp? A rain cover is very important to me :snorkel: The closest alternative to this idea I've come across is the TrailNest. My reservation for this product is I do not want my total...

Does anyone make a CB/HAM radio?

x2! The Midland 75-822 lives in my center console unless I am out with non hams. Throw a mag mount on the roof and it works just as well as a permanently mounted CB. Kenwood ham body is mounted under the seat and the faceplate and mic are on the dash, but could quickly be removed if necessary.

    Map overlay?

Your state should have a geodatabase where you can download most of the information on the county's GIS map. Your problem will be processing the data. Google Earth Pro has some processing power, but ESRI ArcGIS would let you do anything you want with it. As an example, this is the geodata...

Single radio for voice and APRS

I have a Kenwood TMV71A which I run with the Mobilnkd TNC for APRS. I operate APRS on the B side and use voice on the A side, simultaneously. Both sides can operate on the same band if desired (which I usually do).

TOTALLY NEW TO COMMS AND NAV, NEED PURCHASE ADVISE

Start studying and reading about ham and much of the introductory mystery will be solved. I used the ARRL book to study for my technician license and learned a lot in the process, more than I would have by memorizing the study questions. A basic understanding of ham radio lingo and principles...

    BCN PRO MVUM Add-On

Good to see BCN here! Appreciate your response. I know I will be purchasing the MVUM add on. It's great to know you guys are listening to the users. I agree there is no substitute for a current paper MVUM. Those things are the final word for the forest service.

Looking at 100 series need some pointers

If you care to look into its Toyota maintenance history, set up an account with Toyota Owners and plug in the VIN. The rear locker on my 99 takes some time to engage and I have to be moving. The temp gauge fluctuating seems odd. The senders are pretty pathetic and don't read reliably. Mine...

    BCN PRO MVUM Add-On

BCN's response is interesting. In the MVUM data you can download from the FSGeodata Clearinghouse there are many more attributes attached to each trail/road than included in the above screenshot, including open and close dates. I have not yet tried to buy the BCN data to directly compare the raw...

Looking at 100 series need some pointers

Rust, leaking CV boots and a leaking steering rack would be the only specific things I'd look for. Make sure it has a master key (red security light above hvac controls disappears immediately when you put the key in the ignition). If she makes a loud clunk when shifting from reverse to drive...
