Episode 5 - educating the high country
After splitting up for Episode 4, it was time to bring the team back together again. We set our bearings north of Greenbrier County and aimed for West Virginia's summit. The Mountain Institute was hosting this visit...
Thanks to this thread for inspiring my Taco build; my father and I knocked it out in a week. We'll have a DIY install details on the Mountain State Overland blog soon.
Hey 100acre, eastern VA and western WV. The awning extension is located in Bedford, VA.
We used the extension on Episode 3; you can see it briefly in that video - http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/120302-Mountain-State-Overland-exploring-and-protecting-appalachia
Got a Rhino Rack SunSeeker awning extension that I'm trying to get rid of; used only once. From what I can tell, it should slide right into the larger ARB awning if you'd like to add some more sq. footage. Below are some pictures with measurements. The original part number is 32101 if you...
Tub Run Road outside of New Castle is never closed and MVUM doesn't even classify it as a road subject to closure. Although we didn't show it in the video, that first gate was closed when we got there. We walked over to check it out and the lock was open. We took a chance and we got shot...
Thanks! You're not too far off from us; we've got relatives in your neck of the woods. We saw exploring Appalachia as an opportunity to get the "average joe" off the beaten path. Too many people spend their road time on the interstate; its boring and far more dangerous, especially I-81. If...
We started in Daleville VA and logged 150 miles or so to Wytheville. Originally, we planned a 250 mile trip to Mount Rogers, but filming and closed forest gates set you back a bit. If you'd like the .gpx file from the trip, let us know and I'd be happy to email it to you. The road we back...
Right on Ben! DRT, your ladies and your four-legged friends made the trip an absolute delight. There's no doubt you and Alex will be on our minds as we continue to explore our backyard; cheers and toast to memories with your next glass of vino.
Thanks Mort. We've already got Episode 5 marked on the calendar. We're tuning done the 4wd element a bit in the next video but the trucks will always be part of the adventure. There's more offroading in the works in future episodes so stay tuned! We appreciate all the support EXPO has given...

Episode 3 - Welcome to White Grass
In this episode, we take you to White Grass Ski Touring Center in Canaan Valley, WV. This place is so dedicated to cultural preservation that it still operates in one of the oldest Nordic ski lodges in the US.

And thanks for all the other comments guys/gals. We featured some details of the recent coal ash and slurry spills in WV/NC on our blog. Its sad and its important to bring light to these issues because it affects "our" wilderness and "our" trails.
We're slowly redirecting our efforts back...
Sweet, thanks Scott.
Also know that we gave EXPO some props in a recent article published about us and overlanding in The New Artemis; here's the link - http://thenewartemis.com/2014/02/17/primer-to-overlanding-with-mountain-state-overland/
Thanks for your comments Elk. We like Vimeo, but it can be hard for some people with connection problems. We're toying around with posting our videos on YouTube too.
Ha, I grew up 20 miles from Douthat; that's where I got started on a mountain bike. You'll see more of Cannan Valley and...
Cullowhee, NC? No, we don't have any plans to head that way. We're considering some routes in NC/TN for Episode 4 though. Thanks for the heads up; we'll reevaluate our route selection if part of it includes the Cullowhee area.
