Sorry for the delayed response. First thing I would try is to unplug the battery monitor (either a Deutch or black round connector) and then re-plug it back in. at this point it should come back on if not, let us know.
There is nothing wrong with that. I have seen several tent cots on roof rack, and as you mentioned ground tents. In talking with people that do so say it's cumbersome to set up, but if you're camping in rocky terrain or something where it hard to set up on the ground why not?
Honestly its a great design, but poor execution in manufacturing. There's others out there that will work better for your GMC. The issue is mainly that the rear sags due to the incline of the seat, and with the weight pulling it down, they tend to split at the seams.
