Love a good ZJ build. One of the best looking front bumpers I've seen on a ZJ too. With that much rust, what kind of shape are your unibody side control arm mounts in? They are prone to cracking and ripping off even on a rust free vehicle.
Snagged that 5100. Only been playing with it for a little bit so far. Does way more than I will ever utilize, happy with it so far. Just need to figure out where it will permanently reside. Appears the mars/cap may have already been done on it as well as it tx's on GMRS.
Both my wife and I got our tech licenses a couple weeks back and I'm looking for something more than the BFF8HP Baofeng's we've got. There's enough 70cm repeaters in my area that I want a dual band unit, and I really like the idea of the remote display units as well. For now, I just want one...
If you mount the ghost antenna to the rack, you can keep it low enough.
Most people I go out with are GMRS too, but on the way to and from the trail being able to monitor CB is nice.
Why not just mount the ghost antenna off the roof rack or drill through the roof? Not everyone has GMRS so there will likely come a time when you will still want CB.
Time to step up my game. My wife and I both passed our technician exams yesterday. GMRS will still play a big role in comms for us though as we have all the gear, and its easier with friends and family as only a small handful of them are hams.
I used to be in that camp too, but will be drilling a hole in the roof of my 2018 F350 in the coming months. The stake pocket mounts just don't cut it, and I'm running out of room for antennas. I have CB and GMRS already, and will be adding 2m/70cm after I pass my test on Saturday. If I'm...
GMRS handhelds by rule will not have a removable antenna. The Midland GXT1000's are technically rechargeable, but the included battery pack is garbage, only 700mAh. I ditched the battery pack for 4 rechargeable AA's at like 2100mAh. I recharge my AA's in a micro USB charger and just have 2...
Same. I've got 4 of the MXT275s with no issues. A buddy of mine did have an issue with his, but from his research Midland is aware of less than 5 units that had his issue. Something with him being able to RX but no audio coming through on TX.
I like the little ghost antennas when the vehicle allows: https://midlandusa.com/product/micromobile-mxta25-3db-gain-ghost-antenna/ I drilled through the roof of my ZJ and mounted it, great performance with the big ground plane on the roof. Also pretty easy to swap it out for a whip if I...
I think the bigger advantage to the 50w unit coming out later this year is the greater repeater capability that Midland has mentioned in other threads. Especially along the Front Range where the bigger GMRS repeaters won't work with the current Midland lineup.
