Most people who make similar trips just buy an FJ60, do some engine baseline work, put tires and suspension on it, add an RTT, HL jack, fridge, storage boxes, etc. and drive. Less than $15K - easy.
At ExPo'11 Our stand was next to Cristo Slee's exhibit and he had his 80 series TLC there with a fresh install of a Tundra 4.7L V8 and transmission - retaining the original Xcase from the 80. It is geared 4.88, I believe.
This is an amazing install. It looks totally factory and employs no...
I do not know the capacity of your Dodge factory tank, but TransferFlow makes large capacity replacement tanks for most trucks. I am planning on removing the factory tank in my F350 and replacing with a TransferFlow 43 gallon tank. This is the simple solution.
Not-so-simple solution... in my...
Thanks for your advice.
I want a large screen and would use he DeLorme LT40 GPS unit for signal - I would like a single device for driving atlas and topo maps on a larger scale.
So far, no answers to my questions... and I have an extensive collection of paper maps ]:-)
I have 4 six-volt AGM GC batteries in my 24' Airstream. I run a 6.8 CF (12V) fridge, heater blower, and lights without shore power. I can last about 4-5 days. I use a Honda 200i genset through a 4 stage converter to recharge or run 110 accessories.
I think this would be overkill in a utility...
I have a MacBook Pro for doing real work. I am considering the iPad for primary mapping and GPS in my vehicle. E-mail and web access sre good, but not the primary goal.
I have not seen one yet and specs are not clear on the reviews I've read...
Does the iPad2 have a dock port AND a USB port? Looks like the USB is an adapter cable from the dock port? I was thinking of using a Delorme LT40 (USB interface) and running their street SW as well as some Win XT based...
I have an ARE shell on my F350 that I bought without side windows. I used it as the base for a topper to carry my bird dogs. Limited vision is the only negative - unless you are going to occupy the interior. It may offer more security for cargo, and it is cheaper than the standard unit with windows.
I have used a simple tractor back up light switched from the dash - works realy well and total cost is under $20.
On my Landcruiser, there are two 2" holes fitted with undercounter type 12V Xenon bulbs hooked to operate from the reverse switch. These provide plenty of light and take up very...
I have an ARE topper with a Yakima track system and it is quite strong. They are a factory option on many models and makes. You can carry a good load up there if needed. Or a tent.
We like to see a MINIMUM bar spread of 30" More is better. I think that your Air Top will be fine with 34" of spread. The bottom is a foam/fiberglass sandwich and is quite strong and rigid.
I am running a topper on my short bed (6' 8" bed on the F350). My bar spread is around 40" - no problem.
That's a very nice rig. The truck alone is worth the price, as Martyn said, and your have taken care of the one vulnerability of these trucks - the transmission.
These tents do not last long on Craigslist and resales are not that frequent - especially on newer models like the Air Top. Not good for you, but good for us, I guess, that people like the product.
Adam, I am not totally familiar with all the various makers and models of camper shells, but many of our customers have fitted tents to fiberglass toppers and we have had zero reported problems out of probably several hundred such installs.
I have an ARE glass shell on my F350 with Yakima...
Use the factory mounting hardware - it works fine with just two Yakima cross bars. I would NOT attach the tent to both the cab rack and the camper rack. You can put it on either one, but bridging the two will transfer flex stresses to the tent and this is not a good thing.
Call if you need any...
No problem.
Crushability is the major factor in assuring air circulation under the mattress. The material we offer is about 7/16" thick, is not readily compressed, and does not take up much space in the tent. In order to function properly it must not crush down. This is one factor that we look...
The product that we sell is not at all the same as the Masonry Matt product. It is similar to the dry mesh product from the UK and and is made in Europe.
We have now located a USA supplier and are working with samples to determine whether the quality and ventilation properties are good enough...

I have used the stock ('01 F350 7.3) dual Motorcraft batts with an Engel 45 for months at a time, and driving intervals of a couple of days. No problems. I think more batteries is probably overkill. I would opt for 2 charge controlled AGMs that I could combine from the cab with a switch...
