Well, put. Can be applied to the whole vehicle and for that matter a life lesson.
I just viewed a video where dude with an 80 sold it to buy a brand new Prado. Main reason was safety on pavement - which in reality ends up being 95% of the driving you do on expedition. (yes the 80 is better/stronger on trails)
I ask this as I am considering an 80 for expedition use (NA to...
Must live in a bubble cuz I never heard no-clutch referred to as floating gears. - Guess I've been floating gears on my motorcycles for years - not so much in my cars!
Because I'm still looking I have no first-hand experience with getting parts. Having said that I spoke with the local LC dude who owns an independent shop for Toyotas said he has had a few diesels built and never made any comment that parts were tough to find. Most parts are the same as all NA...

If I could find a LHD diesel - it would like it to be a manual.
If I were to buy a RHD I'd probably prefer it be an automatic.
Having said that - I am currently dealing on a nice RHD manual that is 800...
No flaming please from manual proponents.

It is an automatic. I spoke...
Thanks for the kick in the ass I needed - All Good...
As it happens the mint 81 deal fell through (seller was a little bit of a slippery fella - to put is lighty)
I ended up finding an unadvertised - local 81 - marginal rust - never been offroad - low mileage - less than half the price - and...
C p w. All good points. Probably a big drawback with the Troopy is that you just can't easily buy them. I'm guessing parts for the 80s are easier to get as well, as there may have been more of them sold worldwide. Troopy's are also meant for more weight than I will ever expect to load in it...
If you owned an 80 series that checks off all the boxes
-no rust - 3 lockers - diesel - manual - the right color etc etc.
You wanted to set it up for expedition use. Each time you think through the traveling/living/sleeping/cooking/beer drinking configurations, in the end, the Campteq checks...
