Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

I got myself and anemometer, just a cheap one off Amazon to do a few tests on airflow through the radiator. I've got a 16" Bosch fan I had spare off an Audi S4, and it works quite well. I did a few tests yesterday, and some more scientific ones this morning. I copied a similar...

Building a Spare Parts Kit For Unimog 1300L

We have a U1250, and a GVM of 8 tons, your U1300 will probably be 7.5 tons. You can only carry as much spares and tools as you have spare weight for, so that would limit most thing. We carry the things that will help us get out of some remote place, the other parts we have packaged at...

    Leaking front drive shaft seal

It's not an easy fix, you will need some axle stands as you have to separate and lower the torque tube. You will need the seal before you take it all apart, only way to get it out is to destroy the seal. Jack up the truck and put the stands under the chassis, so there is no weight on the...

    Leaking front drive shaft seal

All depends on what truck you have.

    Size question

On mine it is 490mm to the diff, 550mm to the chassis rails and 600mm to the fuel tank brackets. I've been in deep mud and was lucky to be able to back out with ruts around 400mm deep. I have manual tyre inflation system, means taking a break for the corrugations. I run 25psi on the bad...

    Rear Prop-shaft angle 1120 AF

It should be OK, provided everything is lined up properly. Make sure the two flanges are parallel, and the propshaft is in phase. Get either wrong and you will have a problem.

    Size question

lol, and needs a postcode to do a u-turn. I know guys who bought the 6x6 Unimogs only to sell them a few months later after try to drive them on a few tracks. I drove similar size 6x6s in the SADF, great for real off-road traction, but difficult even around the roads, let alone a narrow...

    Size question

Everything is a compromise unfortunately. Our truck has a GVM of 8000kg, and is 3.3m high. We find it comfortable for living in, but some people require more space and a separate toilet/bathroom. Our toilet is in a cupboard, and slides out for use, the shower is in the doorway. We can...

    Air compressor question

Correct, when one of the fuses trips out on mine, the other compressors kept on going.

    Air compressor question

I run two of the ARB twin compressors on my truck, along with the engine compressor for the air system on the truck. They work well in combination when I pump up the tyres on the truck, and they are mainly used for the first start-up to fill the air system. I've got the 12v ones, and they...

Do you monitor what current your system draws?

I wonder how it managed to get distorted, glad it was an easy fix although rolling backwards down a steep hill would not be fun. I carry a complete lift pump assembly with me, and a new set of injectors.

Do you have a photo of the brake set-up on your truck, is there only one actuator or two ( one for each wheel) A spring applied brake is a pretty simple thing, just a spring in a can. This is the Unimog set-up. The actuator is adjustable by moving it forward on the axle, and the spring is...

First time I have heard of a parking brake that requires air pressure, I thought it would be the air pressure that disenaged the brake like on my Unimog. If you have an air leak overnight, then you would lose your park brake. I don't know anything about your brake system though.

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

We have done some long trips with it, and on the last trip it was over 40C. The new radiator kept the truck around 90-94C, which is around the same temperature as the old one, and we have used the od one when it was 48C to 50C where it ran around 98 to 100C. I can't say that it is a big...

    1120 AF Build in Norway

Those look very well made. On problem I have seen with step that reach that far is getting a hand hold close. You may be 3-4 step high before you can reach any bar you have on the door. On light trucks like outs, the truck rocks a bit as you get on the first step, so a hand hold is a good...

    Improving headlight options.

For those of us in Queensland ( and most of Australia) this is the law. Our outer light are "Working" lights, and do not come on with the high beams. We only use them off road. The light bar ( and the big box) you have on your truck would not be legal over here Charlie. Changing the OEM...

    Improving headlight options.

There are two main problems with having powerful high beam headlights, first is the difference when switching to low beams is so pronounced, it is like turning your headlights off, until you eyes re-adjust. I only use the roof lights when there is not likely to be much traffic, as the lower...

    Improving headlight options.

Each to their own Joe, but to me that's like saying don't drive in the rain, or don't drive into the sun. All great advice, but not really practical given the distances out here in Australia, where often need to do 800-1000km in a day. Driving around dusk is a lot more risky than when it is...
