Update: I found that the shorter chassis cab version of the truck has the same wheelbase as the 8' bed version, and i know that the cab and front end is the same, so the CA measurement of 60" looks good to use.
Great inputs, @klahanie. I agree - the CoG is very likely the reason as you said. I originally was thinking of putting the fridge as far forward as possible, then decided to move it backward 24" since the batteries and electric gear may be heavier so put that toward the front. Also, moving the...
That makes sense given from the factory the weight is more in the front with the engine there and a front diff in a 4x4. The percentages i found for factory config seemed to be roughly 65/35 front to rear. So adding the habitat on the back would add a lot of weight, but a decent percentage...
Thx. It's looking like they are also not needed on the build i am considering, since GVWR is 11,000 lbs and it looks like i will be under that.
But you do raise an excellent point - weight capacity of individual wheels and tires.
Assuming the 11,000 lbs is split 30/70 front and rear, the...
Good question on the set of 37s.
On my track car, the wheels and tires are unsprung weight and the springs, shocks, and brakes were majorly upgraded so it is not a worry. Plus race tires and wheels are lighter than stock (even though larger in dimension), so it's kind of a non-factor.
For...
The tray is another area i haven't fully figured out.
Norweld makes a cover for the spare tire, which is the angled silver panel just aft of the headache rack in the photo below. I was thinking out the spare there on one side, and the water tank there (in a box made from the same composite...
Thanks for the bed weight numbers!
Yeah, i got a little lazy on the window calc. The Tern windows I checked were pretty light, e.g., 13 lbs for a smaller one such as in the bed overhang. Figured I would cut out at least several pounds of composite panel wall for each, so the net difference...
I considered the fact that the shower is a) quite large, and b) would visually take away space in addition to actually taking up space.
but whereas a decent shower for some people is a WAF, for us it is a H&WAF. And the size is due to the H (me) having extra broad shoulders - I was measured...
Sure, here you go!
I suspect my numbers are still low, given we want all mod cons, so will keep working on it. But so far it is in line.
I will upload the entire spreadsheet once it is in a bit better shape, in case it is of use to anyone.
Total figures:
Weight of load
4163...
Another thought is ditching the generator - the 3500 can be optioned with dual 380A alternators (and the diesel i think are over 400 each?). It's kinda stupid levels of overkill to charge the habitat batteries with a 6.4 liter generator  but easy to set up. I am not 100% sure how fast...
Thanks Victorian and mog!
Great point on the water. My thought was 40 gallons would go a long way even in the desert, at 2 gallons per person per day (2 - 3 people) plus a couple of showers (2 x 3 x 5 = 30 with no showers). But i tend to plan for all cases; may be better to do a typical case...
hi, thinking of building a flatbed camper on a Ram 3500 with single cab and 8' bed. That Ram's payload is 4,600 lbs for the single rear tire axle version and GCW of 11,000 lbs.
I put together a spreadsheet to estimate the weight and while i can get the weight right at the payload ON PAPER, i...
