The old gal is being put out to pasture.

Risingeagle, thanks for the tip. We just spent the last 2 hours looking at Cirrus 720 and 820 vids on youtube. Did you special order your new 720? What features did you add or subtract? Jeanie is very interested now in the 820 because of the black tank/wet bath and monumental amount of...

The old gal is being put out to pasture.

So the big day of anticipation and discovery has come and gone. Today we made the 2 hour trip to Custom Truck Accessories in Carson City NV, to peruse their fairly well stocked selection of truck campers. We were there to check out the Lance 825 and 865, which we were prepared to special order...

The old gal is being put out to pasture.

Redthies, we did indeed look at the Hallmark Ute, one of their small, lightweight units and found the tanks to be the same almost to the gallon as the Lance Lites. But, it is tiny and much shorter. Not much floor. jefe

The old gal is being put out to pasture.

Redthies, Yes, the Lances are, overall, the lightest TC if you delete all the addons. The actual weight of our 165-s xcab is only a little more than the wet weight because it has so few extras. We always travel without the jacks, so that's a loss. I've replaced the Glo Steps with a Little Giant...

The old gal is being put out to pasture.

Darwin, yes, we perused the Cirrus 820, which has many of the same specs as the 825 and 865 and looks to be well made with an inch more headroom, larger tanks, and frankly more appealing to the eye than the white elephant. The only downside is the dry weight. at least 600 pounds heavier than...

The old gal is being put out to pasture.

jefe here. This month, after reaching maturity on her 21st birthday, (built April 1998) our tried and true Lance 165-s is going to pasture. We've had a good run with her accumulating more than 240 glorious nights, "in the box". She's still amazingly sound and viable, but has a few old age flaws...

Off-grid, full time truck camper (re) build journal - Driven to Adventure

Wonderful work here. You certainly are ambitious and talented. Then again, if you are full-timing in the box, everything needs to be as right as you can make it. You will face the result every single day. jefe

I need a go fund me page quick!!

Impressive, but it won't go where most of us go and is limited to fairly flat and wide dirt roads. That breakover angle is a deal breaker. One drop down into a narrow creek/gully crossing and it will become an appropriately tinted part of the landscape. Who, who is going to recover a landmass...

Flipping Detroit Truetrac gears? Rear in the front!? Anybody done this on something as big and heavy as a E350/D60???

I have True Tracs in both axles ( a front Dana Super 60, which is mostly 35 spline Dana 70 parts including Dana 70 on/off hubs, except the housing and the RG&P, and rear 35 spline Dana 80) and am very happy with the result. After putting a wide splay of of traction aids in 13-4WD's, these are...

Jeep Cherokee (XJ), LX470 (Land Cruiser) , or Something Else?

If you are down on your luck and needing a place to hole up for a few months or even a year, or at least until you get your stuff sorted out, a small and light truck camper on a 2WD, long bed, full size, 3/4 ton HD or larger gas pickup would add a measure of comfort and sustainability to your...

We are just back. Beef Basin? The snow above (2 feet on a 15% grade) and the mud below (30 miles...

We are just back. Beef Basin? The snow above (2 feet on a 15% grade) and the mud below (30 miles of bottomless goo) precluded us from even getting to Beef Basin, as hard as we tried. So we tried getting in over elephant Hill. That's part of the story. I'll be posting a report in the trips...

90's f450 good base for expedition build?

First of all, what is the number on the front axle swap? Dana 60? Dana 70? Dana super 60? or other. And is it a 10 bolt hub with open outer U-joints? The newer Ford F450's have a very good turning radius, albeit with a very wade front axle track. The old style Ford front drive axle does not. My...

Be blunt: is this forum out of my league? (TT modified for off road use)

DWH, The environment in the truck camper section of RV.net has turned a lot less collegial and a lot more argumentative and caustic. Maybe it's a sign of the society in general that we live in. Maybe it's just the slow rolling evolution of forums and people who inhabit them. After 16 years...

Be blunt: is this forum out of my league? (TT modified for off road use)

In addition, profdan brings to this forum a scarce and needed commodity: some amount of humility. He's smart, savvy, freely giving of his experience and has no axe to grind. The tone over on RV.net has taken a turn to the south, which means there is an on going exodus of people to other forums...

Be blunt: is this forum out of my league? (TT modified for off road use)

profdan, good to see you here on the dark side. Dan was a stalwart member over on RV.net's trailer and boondocking sections but mostly hung out with the rabid off road truck camper people who have migrated over here of late. He's taken his rig to some nasty places. Not to worry, he does great...

    Overland Mod Casita Axle

Vintage is correct. Commercial trailer frames and suspensions for camping trailers are not made to do much off roading. There are scant few brands that can take that kind of punishment. The trouble is, the Casita is a fine looking rig for camping, but not so much for hard core off roading. Find...

1990 Comanche Build - The Wilderbeest

You have a lot of perseverance with the Comanche build. I've always thought they were a good platform after a friend bought an '88 and built it. His was the rarest of the rare: a 1988 Comanche, One Metric Ton model. Yes, that's a 2200 pound payload capacity. Wow! What was different? First, the...

GMC Duramax/Outfitter -- great offroad truck camper

Cal, it still pains me to see that it has come to this. However, I understand as I'm getting near the end of my go-round with the XTC myself. Jeanie doesn't want to do this anymore. The real surprise here is that no one yet has snapped up this wonderful rig. It checks ALL the boxes for short or...
