    AmboLander

FDM, When did you purchase the 375x65R16 Mickey Thompsons? When I bought mine in 2012 or 13, they said these were the last of the breed and they were discontinuing the tire. I loved my M.T.'s as super singles on my truck camper, and used them on 12 inch wide by 16 Mickey Thompson wheels on the...

New Truck camper; how to prep truck

Dullers, The truck camper forum on RV.net is still probably the best go to site for the info for which you are looking. Noting your needs/wants/experience, I'm thinking buying a used truck and camper together would be a good choice. You may have to cast your net far and wide to find a good...

Swapping out hitch mounts for more articulation, good idea?

A pintel and lunette is my choice. Works for me on several vehicles, and I have put them through their paces. For my jeeps, i use an 8 ton lunette and a 16 ton pintel. Neanderthal tech, cheapest, combat tested, noisy and clanky, will not let your trailer turn over with no swivel; will not break.

    My Perfect Ambulance Platform?

Pangle, looks good. I considered using Monstaliner Desert Sand on my Lance camper and Dodge Cummins. What I could not find was anyone that had used it on aluminum siding, or how heavy the finished product was. One other thing to think about, depending on how 'off-road' you think you will go with...

    Jack's 2007 Chevy Build

Jack, that is some fine looking flattie you've got there. As per your paradigm: light, spare, waste-less, nimble, and purpose built. I assume there is no 3 or 4 point equalization: none needed for a non-Ford short bed. jefe

Post Pics of your FWC with Lifted Trucks

The trouble with using a truck camper on a 4WD is that all but a small 3-4 inch lift gets you up too high especially with a hardside. So, that's my lift: 3 inches loaded with 35 inch tires. Originally 10 feet tall I now scrape the sky with a 10foot, 4 inch overall height. and a comparo with my...

White Turtle III - Ford Transit - The build and adventure!

Mike, is this rig 4WD? I was struck by your definition of a 'traveling machine' vs. a 'camp mobile', with days in one place being the yard stick. Most so-called overlanders go for the look rather than any practical traveling protocol. It took me decades to go from hard core rock crawling...

    Super Duallies any good off-road

I ran with this setup over some of the narrowest, tightest trails using my leftover hardcore Jeeping technique: compare the super with a stock size spare tire, both mounted: After a while, it was obvious that something had to go south and it was the 12 inch wide cast aluminum wheels: @ 3600...

Favorite Big truck all-terrain tire or mud for camper weight and longevity?

Adventurous, I was surprised at how well the AT-3's did on our winter crossing, coming from Reno over the 7K foot pass at Donner Summit down to our digs at the 4K foot level on the west slope Northern Sierra Nevadas. With the camper on it was snow most of the way; I was in 4WD for 50 miles on...

    popup vs hardtop

kp, If you are open to a change in paradigm, a small, full featured hardside could be a contender. Everyone gets there by degrees, first camping in a tent on the ground; then off the ground in some kind of basic RV; and finally in a hard wall something. In 2001, by chance, we bought a 3 yr. old...

    Super Duallies any good off-road

Are you talking about super singles? If so, I have quite a bit of experience with them under my truck camper. I have come full circle from various 285/75R16 to 14.50/65R16's to 15.50/55R16's (375x65R16) and finally to 315/75R16 AT-3's. The question is how narrow a trail do you expect to travel...

Favorite Big truck all-terrain tire or mud for camper weight and longevity?

Jack, Having had oh, maybe 35 sets of tires on 4WD's I don't buy any tire any more for "The look". The only thing I don't like about the AT-3's is, by design (big tread blocks/small voids), they are NOT a good mud tire. But I don't do much mud anymore and try to avoid it. I only have about 10K...

modern diesel for overlanding in developing countries - post your solutions

Christian, This is the conundrum of traveling outside N. America with a diesel platform rig. The most important thing to know is the year of manufacture. The year or years of the changeover to Urea canisters and D.E.F. tanks in the exhaust was 2006-2007, depending on the make. Since that time...

    campsite pics..lets see um

Some camps: June 1965. From the distant past a beach camp at Point Sal on the Pacific Ocean, north of Vandenberg AFB, CA. The rig is a 1949 Willys Ute Wagon with Chevy V-8 power. 2017 pic in a remote canyon in Death Valley: Waiting for the tide to go out to get to our 'hidden' beach south of...

Favorite Big truck all-terrain tire or mud for camper weight and longevity?

For specifically carrying a camper box on your truck, I keep coming back to Cooper AT-3's in a 315/75R16 size. 35" tall, which is as much as will clear a massaged, 3" lifted Gen II Ram front fender opening. Load rating: 3860 pounds at max inflation. On the front: on the 10 inch wide rear...

    Wilderness First Aid Course

Peneumbra, Thanks for the tip. I have had a few painful, immobilizing set backs in the 18 years since that roll over (yes, I'm now 74) and have finally set up an appointment to see a young Sports Medicine Specialist who has all the latest technology in shoulders. His patients report a much...

Here are a few examples over the past 50 years of off-road camping and travel with trailer connected to motive device. Domeland southern Sierra 1967: 1966 FJ-40 w/ homemade trailer: The kid on the left is now 60 years old. The young man on the right, my brother Jerry is dead. Continental Divide...

    Dodge Ram 5500 motorhome

Ward, We have the same difficulty with friends when we visit them. They want us to stay in the house, but they just don't get it that the best night's sleep ever is awaiting in our mobile casa. We stayed recently at my Bro John's compound in Agua Dulce sleeping in his back driveway:

    Wilderness First Aid Course

Wilderness First Aid. Everyone needs to know what to do. Most people don't have the time or inclination to take a hands-on course as above. For them, a minimum would be to familiarize themselves with a book i found by default on the Rubicon Jeep Trail. The book is called "Wilderness 911" and has...
