This IS the most inventive and exciting part of Expedition Portal. Finally, form follows function, in a big way. Congratulations, all youse guys.
I'll give my follow up on our hard side TC trip over the Mojave Road towing little Bradley-1955. The thing that scuttled the fine operation of the...
RegCab,
I'm 69 yrs. old, out of the L.A. Philharmonic for 6 years now, and from the pic in your profile, it looks like you are a tall drink of water. I can see where a cramped space may not be for you. With your truck it also looks like we are chasing after the same rabbit.
I have no regrets...
Drodio and XP,
While I have no dog in this fight, it is interesting how folks defend their model pop-up to the end, if need be. I really wanted to learn something about pop-ups ( I hard-core, off-road a Dodge P.U. with a small Lance Lite 165-s hard side) and live in Nevada City and see XP Mark...
This being an opinion page, I would say the Alaskan is too accessory-free, and too old to be a viable, long term expedition domicile. It's not a lightweight either. It would be pretty bare bones travel.
Ron's MB416 with '72 AK: I think he's on this forum and he goes everywhere his jeep club...
The answer is, "Ford or Chevy?" I've done the top half of your friends trip in 2003. For that, it just doesn't matter. Any rig will do. About the 'southern' part of their trip, I don't know. What I do know is; for poor or doubtful roads you want the lightest, narrowest, least tall camper you can...
Mark,
Not many bites here? We will see you there. There are more than a dozen XTC's (Extreme Truck Campers) that have their own cordoned off camp area at the Overland Expo.
Poseur jefe
Somewhere along the Mojave Road: click on pic for short clip
The XTC's will be out in force. Extreme Truck Campers. We will be put in a pen together to smell each others' behinds. Should be a dozen or more hard and soft side truck campers from far and wide in attendance. This starts another chapter in the saga of, "run whatcha brung". Our recent trip over...
Doug,
A very clear and concise scenario on your experience of the Stablelift. It's clear to me that you pays your money and takes your chance on just about anything. We have some good friends on RV-net, truck camper forum ( your old hangout before you were drummed out of the corps 8<)) who swear...
This actually is jefe4x4. I changed my email addy and expo won't let me have two.
About 1972, my brother Jim and Irving Bush, a colleague from the Phil took a trip down to Baja. Three of us in my built FJ-55. Unfortunately, we went thru Ensenada on 17 SEPT, Mexican Independence day (or battle...
Jeffrey,
Jeffrey here. You mean the green Jeep FC-170? It is a cool rig. The one towing, is it a 4WD? Looks to have a narrow stance and a high center of gravity. How is the box attached to the frame or bed? It does have a nice, short wheel base, an advantage on winding jeep trails. What it is...
For years I have heard of truck campers being pulled apart by the twisting of the box in the truck bed and the resisting of said twisting by the four tie-downs connecting the box to the bed or frame.
1. This happens when off-road or when the axles flex mightily when you drop a wheel in a large...
I guess this thread won't die. You won't either if you use propane. I did want to comment on using propane at high elevation. On a trip over all the high passes in the San Juan's in Colorado in our truck campers, I had the gas alarm go off while using the burners on the stovetop to cook supper...
nw,
Thanks for the advice. I've been over the road before in my pickup and know the place you are talking about. The trailer has a pretty wide track (at least a lot wider than all the militaries I've had) and is almost as wide as the front track on the Dodge. I"ve done some experimenting with...
Three TC's (2-small hardsides and 1-popup) are doing the Mojave Road in a couple weeks. The problem is there will be seven full-size men in 3 rigs. What to do? With space at a premium for bodies, I've decided to tow my 1955 Bradley behind my Dodge/Lance Lite and reserve the cab area for my...
UPdate. A couple pages back I told the story of all my off-road, tow-behinds. In a couple weeks 7 men and 3 truck campers will be doing the Mojave Road, aka: the government road from the 1860's: an ancient two-track across the Mojave desert from Fort Mohave on the Colorado river to just east of...
Skibum,
We live on the west slope, Northern Sierra Nevada, 10 miles east of N.C. on hwy. 20 @ 4000 feet. That's why you see snow in many of these pix. Yes, I know where everything you mentioned is, and it's a fine place for us to wind up our declining years since retiring 6 yrs. ago. We had a...
If you're still out there,
The path you are going down has been trod by many a jeeper. What set up can you conjure to have a place to sleep/camp in and tow your jeep, safely? I tried flat towing my CJ8 but had nothing but almost-tragic woe. Those 37x14.50's had a mind of their own.
The reason...
Oh my, what beautiful camping trailers you have. It was a dazzling display to wade through all those pages of "this is how i did it" trailers.
I've had a few small tow-behinds for various 4x4's I've owned. Some were so long ago I don't have pics of them.
1. I home-built a jeep trailer to tow...
Good information boys. In my experience dragging a military trailer over the Rubicon, I don't think 45 degrees is enough. Of course, we've rolled those little militaries onto their lids a few times, and maybe that would not have happened if we had the limiter. But, what about the torque on the...
