    HF Antennas

There's never a single perfect solution to all the things you want to tinker with in ham, is there? FWIW, though, I tried mobile HF and it's not something I really found compelling. But I drive a stick shift truck in the mountains so it's more a question of attention focus and simply having...

    HF Antennas

You don't mention what bands you're most interested in using. It does make a difference. You mention Winlink but you might focus only on a couple of bands to improve your chances over nimbleness with an antenna that doesn't perform particularly well on any one band. Winlink is handy because...

What are the best sources of air lines, manifolds and fitting for on-board air?

Total agree with @Verkstad. Just use quality Festo, Parker, etc parts. Whatever you can get at typical industrial suppliers or McMaster, MSC, Grainger. They make stainless push fit connectors for food processing intended to be washed down with sanitizing chemicals that might be better for...

Decision time. Trail Comm with CB required per 4x4 club. Upcoming changes, need WX.

CB, ham, FRS/GMRS - just use whatever you gotta to communicate with the people you need to. There's pros and cons but that's all it comes down to in the end. Personally I've found the argument about OTR trucks and CBs to be losing steam. They seem to rely more on cell phones and satellite...

    GMRS antenna on smaller vehicles

LOL, the sheet metal on modern vehicles is so thin that regular NMO mounts barely can clamp without dimpling, not to mention seem like they'd bend up in a stiff breeze. So I reinforced the underside of my roof with something similar. I ended up using a little bit of conductive epoxy rather...

    GMRS antenna on smaller vehicles

If you can keep separation do that, of course. But understand @drrobinson that there's ideal and there's realistic. So you may have to prioritize what you do to compromise when running multiple radios and antennas. It's not a definite "this is enough" situation where you can say you are safe...

    GMRS antenna on smaller vehicles

Locating two VHF and/or UHF antennas on the roof is tricky. It's been discussed, in fact. https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/gmrs-cb-and-am-fm-antennas-in-close-proximity.217489/#post-2903316 I put two antennas centered left-right on my roof using your option 2 if I understand what...

Photos of mid-sized vehicles - Post Here

Super special custom! I just cut my stock rigid plastic flaps and connected rubber sheet extensions. I'll have to snap a photo.

    GMRS antenna on smaller vehicles

No ground plane is a misleading concept. What it means is the antenna does not need the ground plane (e.g. the metal of your truck under and around the mount) to achieve a suitable match to your coax feedline. NGP does not give you the ability to just put the antenna anywhere and automatically...

    GMRS antenna on smaller vehicles

Where @Superpanga has his antenna should work alright but will have a distinctly distorted pattern favoring the hood side. Given the limitations of a soft top and such it's about the best you can do, although mounting it on the roof rack bars might be an option on his truck. The important...

You've hinted at the difference - beamwidth and directivity. As you increase gain the beamwidth narrows. In the case of a vertical antenna like that means you want to see the main lobe(s) of energy flatten towards the horizon. This is a very simple simulation run comparing a generic 1/2λ...

    Splicing WeBoost cable?

You can't really splice coax like it's battery cable. I mean, you can sort of if you know what you're doing. But terminating the two ends you want to join with connectors is far more reliable mechanically and electrically. LMR-195 (which is similar to RG-58 coax) and SMA connectors seem...

Petitions for Reconsideration of Part 95 Personal Radio Services Rules Report and Order

The club I'm in just started standardizing on GMRS/FRS literally last month hopefully to bring order to the chaotic entropy of FRS, CBs and hams. FM CB might have a place but my feeling is that ship has sailed and ain't coming back to port. It's an interesting thought but who's going to buy...

Petitions for Reconsideration of Part 95 Personal Radio Services Rules Report and Order

GMRS is clogged so we're moving to FM CB. This sounds like a done deal, yes on all requests. FM on 27 MHz CB, automatic and periodic location on FRS/GMRS (I think that means MIC-E APRS basically) and a MedRadio change.

Will this radio transmit on GMRS frequencies?

This is true, FCC ID is T4K-779UV, granted for Part 95E. Doing this negates the above statement. It might be true that it can be modified to work on ham bands and, if so, then it would be fine to use it there but it would make it no longer legal on GMRS.

yaseu FT-857D owners. Can you answer this?

    Midland MXT400

FWIW don't necessarily limit yourself to a couple of antenna choices. There's nothing magical about GMRS. It's UHF still and just slightly higher than the 70cm ham band so you might even have an old ham antenna that will work. Some of them even have enough bandwidth to cover both the upper...

Recommend a great, not just good, first aid kit.

Travis Hurley runs a company called Outer Limit Supply. He happens to be member of the Rising Sun 4WD Club and paramedic so has a good idea or two about 4WD first aid kits. He gets to many of the events around, Cruise Moab, Overland Expos, Easter Jeep Safari to see them in person...
