There is potential drama with both tires and bearings, esp. if not used/maintained properly. The root issue is weight and the limits of the F550 as designed. Hopefully, the owner of the orange rig gets his vehicle on a scale regularly to see&track his front & rear axle weight, particularly since...
Yes. IMO and having seen it a few times, the 335/80 MPT81/beadlock/Kelderman setup works pretty well but it requires more maintenance and supervision than some folks (new owners?) are accustomed to when they roll out for a weekend+ of adventure. This is where I think we see the tires...
That rig is righteous, have to say I wish the camper market was headed in this direction versus the increasingly expensive, complex and breakable path we seem to be headed down. Have you ever considered a rack on the front of the camper to hold additional gear, esp. fuel cans/water or just...
The older rigs are lighter, 6.0 or 6.4 Powerstroke-powered F550's vs newer 6.7 F550 (the new carbon fiber Lti is supposed to be lighter though no knowledge if just the camper body is lighter or they've made significant changes to the whole package to make it lighter). Perhaps older axles and...
I would probably take a look at the GXV Adventure Truck as well and consider the Ram 5500. The newer F550's appear to be having some rear axle/bearing drama.
I'll quote myself from a few years back since it basically fits the OP's question and CA's comment above:
"+1 on charlieaarons’ comments. I don’t know if you are committed/restricted to a beadlock 335/80/20 on your 550 chassis (camper?) but another, easily sourced and maintained, option that Ive...
You might take a look at Oasis Mfg (XD3000 and/or other models). Has lived on the underside of my chassis for 14 years of all season use and no problems. I've been glad in particular that it performs with no issues in cold weather.
I am wondering if anyone here has used an ARB twin air compressor for their Unimog/MB truck tires? The specs say the unit is capable of ~6 cfm or 174l/m at 0PSI which drops to 4.68cfm at 29PSI with a 150PSI max. I've never used an ARB product and don't know if this will be adequate for heavier...
I'm not aware of locking diffs...would be great to find a proven front/rear system designed for 550/5500: anyone out there doing this? Those tires appear to be Goodyear G275 335/80r20. Looking at the specs for those tires I have to wonder what newer/longer ER's weigh, especially the load on...
Couldn't get along with the vehicle manufacturer or the way it was built? I'm trying to envision what sort of issues would creep up unannounced on this rig.
Beats a sextant in whiteout and easier to dash-mount than an astrolabe: I've used an olander for 2+ years with no issues throughout North America. It is not the smoothest tool for easy onroad/highway nav, esp. in urban areas and won't tell you if it's raining outside or where to secure the best...
Semantics, maybe polemics for some: the definition of offroad is subjective, unimproved road = 4 syllables, off pavement too broad and "bad road" might just fit better. Similarly, "overlanding" must be a more marketable term and make people feel better than "motorized 4x4 camping" even though...
I don't know how heavy your truck is but those G275 tires are getting some decent reviews in the Earthroamer and GXV communities where rigs weigh ~16-20k lbs loaded. You might give Dynabeads a call, describe your situation and see what they recommend. I've been using them for several years with...
That looks like a very well taken care of rig if pictures from Dacono are recent. Did you swap a 6.4 for a 6.0 powerstroke or is that a typo? You may want to add mileage, duration of your ownership, wear/condition of the MPT-81's and some engine specifics, you may be asked. Then again, this...
Decent short EXPO "detailed walk around" video but it skipped any discussion of range/fuel capacity. Using the "search" on this site I managed to find that the Grenadier has a 23-24 gallon gas tank (which would equate to 300-350mi loaded range on pavement?) and that the company may work with...
QUESTION: Would it be difficult for EXPO site admin to require a simple standardized form for sellers to use when listing a vehicle e.g. the seller inputs MAKE, MODEL, YEAR OF MFR, MILEAGE, etc. in a form and this is in turn presented in the title in an orderly fashion?
Thanks for info on performance. Does/can the gasoline tank(s) capacity in your rigs exceed the standard 38 gallon tank? Roughly, what sort of range would you expect a CORE to get on the highway, where most of us spend most of our time, with a 6000lb payload (13' Box, people, gear)? I am...
That CORE is a nice looking truck. I'm not too familiar with the platform but like the Acela Straya it looks capable offroad and not as colossal as the fmr FMTV/Monterra. How would this rig perform highway driving with a loaded 13' Bliss box? What is gasoline capacity in the tank(s)? Is there a...
No worries, your struggle is commonplace on this site.
