Fun question: What other 4x4 would you replace your current Toyota with and why?

Pretty much need a pickup for now, so would replace with another 22RE Toyota 2nd generation, or perhaps a 4cyl Nissan Hardbody. Love the older Toyota truck body styles, but not interested in carbed engines. For an expedition rig, HJ60 or FJ62 in basically stock form. For an offroad machine...

Thinking about getting a LC or LX470 or maybe the LR3

The 80 series six cylinder is not the old fashioned engine based on the Chevy, but it does have more head gasket failures than the earlier F engines and later V-8's. The 100 has a more robust frame than the 80, not weaker. Why not a 4runner? Not so expensive to own and repair.

[YEAR 7!] Quit our jobs, sold our home, gone riding...

Nice photos. The Glenn highway is the national scenic byway you drove out of Anchorage to Glennallen, and it's the Wrangell/St. Elias National Park that skirts the route north from there to Tok. Won't argue with you over the veracity of global climate change, but will point out that "the...

    Keeping the Wrangler alive

What kind of roads are you talking about, (perhaps share a photo) and what do you mean by IFS failure? In other words, what components other than the obvious ones such as TREs, bushings, etc. fail and are irreplaceable, or cost prohibitive to replace?

    Wheelers 5-Leaf, or OME Leafs?

NW offroad sells replacement springs that provide much more load carrying capacity than stock ( I think 700 lbs more), yet supposedly lift a max of 3/4". I'd also be concerned about too much lift with OME.

    Warmest Fabric/Insulator?

Northface's thermoball jackets are reputed to be just as warm and lightweight as down, but have the advantage of retaining their insulative properties when wet. Wool with silk undergarmets is a pretty nice setup.

    Pole of Cold expedition

The extremes are impressive, but it's the average temperatures that really tell the story. Siberia's average annual temperature, summer included, is about the same as Montana's average low temperatures in winter. The Pole of Cold is an appropriate name for this expedition.

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

No, but I have seen "Deliverance". Guns are for hunting-period- in my opinion. Now if I was camping in inner city LA perhaps my attitude would change.

    Expedition to Jasper Canada

The little town of Jasper is cute and kinda fun too. A big contrast to Banff, which is constantly overrun with tourism on a large scale.

FS: Unimog 1300 Expedition Camper SOLD

That's an amazing truck. It would make a great northern explorer home base. Maybe put it up on the Anchorage Craigslist. It couldn't hurt, considering there are lots of people in AK with deep pockets. No, I'm not one of them. :) .. .

    97 pathfinder ?'s

I think you'll like the Pathfinder a lot. Nissans are sort of the sleeper Japanese make out there, compared with the popularity of Toyotas. But my experience with them is they're about equally fine in quality. It'll be a big upgrade over a Jeep, for sure. Parts are sometimes a bit difficult...

International scout II or other old iron

Love that '69. Had a '66 with the 4cylinder and 3speed. It was quite primitive. Also had a '77 with the 345, auto and rancho lift many years ago. Here's a really bad photo of the 77 prior to the lift.

The Old Wood Hauler: 1983 Toyota 4WD Build/Restoration

That truck is a beauty. Nice work on the front. Mud tires don't seem ideal for your intentions. Bet you could get a smoother ride and better mileage with an all terrain. What is the plan for the bed? We see the one rust spot there.

    hypothetical reliability of old Toyotas

Come on! Yeah, it's time you stopped worrying and go ahead with a trip to Alaska. Agree that this discussion is actually about newer Toyotas rather than old ones. :)
