    Building Camper for Small Pickups

I said I had "400 pounds of bumpers and sliders", not fridges and all the other crap. The GVW is designed into the vehicle from the ground up. You cannot increase that without upgrading the entire drivetrain, from clutch to the axles. The frame would require extensive strengthening. Unless...

    Building Camper for Small Pickups

I do not have A #200 pound bumper. I have two bumpers that total 200 pounds. I have also re-geared to 4:56. Re-gearing and suspension do not increase the GVW of any vehicle. All they do is make the GVW more manageable.

That's a nice shell! No prices though.

I will use either 3/4" or 1" FRP, minimal windows, and I'm playing with different joint designs. Basically, you make things lighter by defining what the true engineering requirements are and choosing the materials and methods to match those criteria. It has to be a comprehensive approach. I'm...

2" FRP composite? or is that 7.2? From the weight you gave I'm assuming you are using 1" FRP right?

Cave lists their camper at #750. I think it would be tough for anyone to build anything worth having for less than $10K

All of you guys who build these campers put a ton of work into them! It's not a get rich quick thing at all. I'm sure the profits are not what people think either, well unless you are charging 40K LOL.

    What does "Light Weight" mean?/

Yes, that must be the perception,..hoping to give us some voice here I guess. I've been playing with some designs that are 60" wide, 72" tall and cab over. Like you, I will build my own. Actually, wood can be very good if used properly, again look to the boat building world. The problem is...

    Building Camper for Small Pickups

Bumpers are "non-essential" gear? We don't operate in the same world I'm afraid.

Check out Goober's thread. He built a nice little camper using stuff from home depot that came in at 522 pounds. He's already ahead of the industry. Like you, I favor chassis mount so you don't have the added weight of a flatbed or box bed. I want a #350 camper, and I'm quite sure it can be...

    What does "Light Weight" mean?/

Well said. Some even use particle board, which is the lowest strength to weight known to man! I've never seen composite cabinets, or even something simple like a table top.

    What does "Light Weight" mean?/

There clearly is a cultural difference. I've been a backpacker my whole life. Many people I know have never been more than 100 feet from their car. I'm making ZERO value judgement about that! My point is that MY needs are not being served by anything currently on the market. Starting this...

    What does "Light Weight" mean?/

I understand, but I do not agree. Air exchange in my opinion IS EXPRESSLY NEEDED TO REDUCE HUMIDITY.

The price of campers has skyrocketed. In many cases the cost of the camper is more than the truck. I think people are mostly good with paying a fair price, but at $40,000, ......do you buy a camper or build a big new workshop?? When I was searching for a possible camper, I couldn't find...

    What does "Light Weight" mean?/

I guess I am confused...When you said "Air exchange helps, but in many cases it simply isn't needed if insulated well",...I took that to mean " Air exchange isn't needed if the insulation is good enough??? In terms of air temperature, dew point, etc., the point I was making was that the wall...

    Building Camper for Small Pickups

Right...every slide in I have seen, even pop up campers exceed the capacity of a Tacoma once gear and people are added. I think the total of everything is around 1,600#, but that gets eaten up pretty quickly. Just my bumpers and sliders weigh around 400#, people are 300, basic tools and...

Condensation occurs when the surface is below the dew point. Surface temperatures of cold bridged areas can be far below the cabin temp. You can be at 70 dregees in a camper and have condensation or even ice. Glass and bridged aluminum are the worst offenders. Even minimally insulated wall...

Moe, It's true, the key is joinery. Most people don't even stop to think that the glass sheet that sits a couple feet in front of them on their daily commute is held in by "glue". It has been for decades. The technology to join things with adhesive has been in use for decades, but...
