Thermal blankets etc are our standard personal emergency kit. We don't usually carry sleeping bags etc
They had located the patients but they weren't ok to walk out so they decided to stick it out till first light so a chopper could collect them
Just by the way, the trend here is moving to bubble wrap in place of space blankets.
Less likely to tear and does a similar job of insulating the patient.
I've got two pairs of gor-tex boots.
One pair (Salomon Cosmic GTX) are like mini saunas on my feet. I only use them in midwinter.
My other pair are leather with some sort of venting system apparently (Hi Tech E-vent). Very cool in hot weather and I wear them all year round.
So I'm no expert here...
That south african gadget that passes for a tyre chain is rubbish. A novelty. South Africans generally know buggerall about tyre chains because hardly anybody has a need for them here.
As a South African I think I'm qualified to make that comment.
I'm involved in SAR and we need good chains for...
I use a regular hydraulic bottle jack and keep a few short offcuts of scaffold planks to use as spacers if needed.
I've had an air bag for many years but it's a seldom used passenger.
I also had a high lift jack for many years. Never used. Not once. I gave it away to a friend who was leaving...
At the upper cable station on Table Mountain, Cape Town. We had just finished a SAR recovery and were waiting for the cable car to come collect us (had closed down for the night already) when we discovered a camera vending machine thing. Press a button and your free photo uploads to a website...
I ran a huge cone shaped K&N on a 4x4 for 14 years. When I sold the truck it was still running sweet and burning clean. The truck died of rust not grit.
If you maintain a K&N according to spec they work just fine.
I'm also an anti HiLift jack person. I had one for donkey's years standing unused in the garage. I eventually gave it away to a friend.
Then I had an oops in the snow one night and needed to winch myself sideways off a cliff. Suddenly a HiLift jack became important in my life. Got one bolted to...
In the Safrican rescue scene I need to be able to use the amateur frequencies (145.xxx) as well as commercial frequencies (152.xxx) and occasionally (seldom) even marine (156.xxx)
All of this programmed into one 2m commercial radio.(Icom F110)
What are my antenna options to try work over such...
The problem is heat. I have a similar bag to those shown here (old and falling apart) but I keep mine inside an OEM plastic storage box behind my seat to try insulate it a better.
I have an extended cab and luckily it comes standard with two storage boxes behind the seats
Don't lose too much sleep over not having easy access to diesel trucks.
Here in South Africa the novelty has worn off already.
TDi's are more expensive to purchase
The price of diesel has risen substantially since the trend began.
TDi's require more (expensive) maintenance
TDi's are extremely...
