Lack of vigilance seems to be the #1 cause of accidents on the scenic roads in this area, followed by driver inexperience. Mine was the former of the 2.
Unfortunately, that was on the graded dirt road near Silverton. I was backing up the road and my tire slipped on the edge of the road, it was all over once that happened. I am glad to see that your daughter enjoyed the trip as much as my kiddos did. I plan on going back a few more times...
Yes, it was....until the following evening when I rolled it.
Time for finding another rig to transfer all my stuff over to. Thankfully my 7 year old daughter was buckled in at the time and we were both able to make the drive back to camp. I am glad your trip was uneventful.
Great trip report!!! Let me know if you have any room for company in the September trip. I worked at the North Rim for two summers and enjoy visiting that area from time to time.
I will be just down the road in Pocatello this weekend. On Monday I will head to American Fork, UT for some backcountry exploration in my Land Cruiser. Just look for a White F250 Crew cab pulling a trailer and my other half driving the dark green FZJ80 behind me.
I would pass on it, even as a parts truck. If you are patient, you will find the right one. I purchased mine in February for $3600 with 155,000 miles and the front axle/birfields/knuckles had just been done.
All the passes in Colorado are still under snow and will likely not be open for this trip out. I heard a few days ago that Yankee Boy Basin near Ouray is open to the waterfalls. Most passes do not open until mid to late June, or early July.
I suggest you spend some time on her for the trail...
I went through the same decision when looking for a full sized rig. I decided to pass on the half ton models as the beds on these was 5.5--5.75 feet. My F250 has a 6.75 foot bed, much better for when I want to sleep back there and not practice yoga contortions!
Hugh is a great guy, as are all of his staff. I have already spent time and money at his place since getting this Cruiser. Everytime I am in there, I see more stuff that I like and will often gaze at other customer's rigs as well. It was Hugh's staff that helped me with information when I was...
I will do that. Let me know if you might be interested in the 1992 as it is still for sale. I totally understand going with the newer ones as I have really enjoyed working on and driving this one. What part of the State are you in?
That same truck here in Colorado would go for $10,000-12,000. The miles are not bad and these diesels do seem to last forever. I have owned mine for over 1.5 years now and have been happy with it. Just for comparison's sake, I purchased mine for $15,400 from a dealer in Arizona. It was owned...
Great! I get up that way a few times a year. I actually looked at Land Cruisers 3 years ago as I was considering something to comfortably haul my family on our trips. I ended up with a Suburban at the time as I needed the space and towing capacity. At the time I reasoned that the Suburban...
Thanks for the compliment and for the mentoring and encouragement your build thread provided. I have to say that working on building this has been a therapeutic experience to release stress from the past four years of my wife's journey.
Thanks, I think these are a solid platform and have been...
A year and a half ago I sold my old 4 wheeling rig, a mildly built Toyota T100 truck with a small 2" lift, solid rear locker and 33" tires. I no longer had the time to keep up with replacing the ball joints as I was caring for my wife and children during her battle with Leukemia.
I told myself...
Thanks for your trip report, you showed me an area of Colorado (Pagosa Springs to Creede) that I have not explored yet. It is on my list for this Summer.
What tipped it for me is the similar mpg numbers of gas vs. diesel for a full size Ford. Also, the gas F250s I was finding got worse mpg than the diesels. I looked long and hard at F150s and GMC/Chevrolet 1500 half ton models. The F150s were all priced too high and had a bad history of...
Congratulations on your decision to keep it. I have a 4 door truck and still bought a Landcruiser to get me to the backcountry areas that my truck is too big for.
Great build thread! I plan on following this in my build. I am in the process of putting the same lift on and did the PHH, thermostat and brake booster today. Once the lift and tires are on, I need to tackle the front oil leaks that you did. I appreciate your including the maintenance items...
