Every 4x4 vehicle has its limits
Example: A Earthroamer
To design for the limits the owner sets "just right" is the correct method.
Overlanding jeep trails is not made for bigger rigs.
The rig I build will do better in the backcountry than a Earthroamer and not as good as a jeep
Last time I...
I welcome the comments you made. We in the USA are not as experienced with Isuzu 4x4's
I knew about the wheelbase when I started. Still I have a turning radius the same as a MB Sprinter 170.
Considering the amenities I have is still very acceptable.
On ground clearance, the front dana 60...
With a spring mounted subframe, one end is fixed. Mine is in the front close to the cab.
A 30 inch ditch is fine with me. More than that, I'll turn around and find another route.
My rear spring mounts - 9 inches of spring length
5 inches after compression.
(needs mods before the finished product is mounted on the truck frame)
Point of reference - Australian brackets shown below (for sale)
Thanks 100X for the comments
My wheelbase is 176. (crew cab)
And honestly I will not enter into that type of ditch you chose to enter into. My rig is not designed for jeep only type trails. There is millions of trails with less than that erosion in the western USA and Canada.
I calculate a side to side movement by the cab of 2.5 inches.
(rear "subframe" springs only allows a 5 inch movement)
So:
Bed length: 14 ft = 168 inches
Twist amount at rear: 5 inches
So, the twist angle:
θ=tan−1(5168)≈tan−1(0.0298)≈1.71∘\theta = \tan^{-1}\left(\frac{5}{168}\right) \approx...
When calculating the habitat clearances over the cab roof and mounted to the truck frame. I left 4 inches of clearance to the cab roof. The frame will twist and based on my articulating subframe there is movement. More so further down the frame over the rear axle. Never-the-less I left 4 inches...
@SkiFreak Gave me the idea to hang a tank off the subframe
I want to hang a medium Aux freshwater tank there.
Does anyone have any good practice advice?
Seen below is the idea, concept example
So on my mind when I decided to spec out the habitat; How do I avoid a dry rot floor.
My solution was to build a airspace of 1 1/2" below the wood floor.
If water dropped it would accumulate in this airspace. And not sit on wood surfaces for any length of time.
My floor in the habitat is...
Seeing a lot of Van builds with "dry rot" in the wood floors. (from other company builds) Due to hidden "very slow" water leaks.
Once that accident happens, the whole interior must be removed or demoed.
On one YouTube video a owner of a Earthroamer said he has water damage in the wood floor...
I'm not an expert.
Here is what I know
