I friend of mine put 33s on 17 rims on his Jeep, and they work really good in all the terrain we tried, and not much noise in the road.
With 16 psi, they seem to grip rock real nice.

How about a MacBook, and Asus Eee and a external disk, for less than 2 grand you would have speed, portability and redundancy, all very desirable in a trip.
Thats what i would do, maybe i will also get a external GPS receiver and use the Asus EePC as a nice GPS and note taker while my Macbook...
