Got the interior “reconfigured” for access to the transmission:
What a battle: that cover just BARELY came out with the seat and A/C in there.
Got the transmission all sealed up:
Installed a new distributor bushing to replace the one that came out with the old...
First pic is the parts cleaner, where I remove greasy dirt. A small wire brush is essential.
I towel & blow it dry, then cover the painted areas with KBS Aircraft Stripper for 30 minutes or more. Then I rinse it, scrubbing off the old paint & stripper residue with both bristle and wire...

5-speed OD transmission. Now the work begins, and Memorial Day is looming really large.

All brand loyalties aside, blown head gaskets are a known issue on Subaru fours from the late ‘90’s to the late oughts/early teens, IIRC. Check out subaruoutback.org for further details, it’s where I got info on the necessary procedures, tools, and parts.
