I’m trying not be obtrusive, hopefully better picture later of unfolded (like the proton in 3 Body Problem!) camping trailer and 77 series 4 door LC wagon.

Just paid a visit to our neighbors in this beautiful quiet campground on the Kunene River on the border with Angola. They’re from Limpopo area of SA. Nice newish 77 series 4 door with V8 diesel and elaborate popup/expandable offroad capable trailer. I’ll try to sneak a picture later.

So this is our guide for the day and grandson in front of the most ultra basic cheapest LC (pickup version) possible, in northern Namibia near Epupa Falls. It’s recent, has 5-bolt wheels. V6 rather than inline 6 gasoline engine. Rear diff lock only. The usual very HD rear leaves and coil sprung...

Options to insure a GXV Adventure Truck XT?

Are you trying to just get liability, or also “collision”, i.e. get reimbursed in case of wreck, also comprehensive, covering theft, other damage like windshield etc etc? Because my personal experience is they’ll happily sell just liability no matter how weird the chassis, as long as you have a...

    South Africa version fancy setup

The guy delivering braai (bbq) wood to us. Asked him how much for new LC pickup. He says N$700k = US$37k This is of course basic model with single cab and 6 cyl diesel rather than V8.

    South Africa version fancy setup

BTW a guy who works at the campground estimates the LC (diff locks are the main, very inexpensive option) maybe was US$45k

    South Africa version fancy setup

V8 turbo diesel double cab 70 series Landcruiser. Badroad capable looking trailer. Maybe another picture when set up. Currently at delightful Oliphantrus campground in Etosha NP, northern Namibia. Saw 2 rhinos, 1 lioness 10’ from road, vast numbers of zebras, wildebeest, elands, and zillions of...

    No Starter - No Problem

I carry a spare starter. It was balky in 40+C summer temperatures. Ok now in 25C. It’s either the relay (mounted on the starter) or the solenoid. Have to change it before putting it back on the boat. A bit of a PITA to change.

1978 Land Rover 101 Forward Control build

Looks like it needs a nice 4L 4cyl diesel transplant, maybe with a 5 or 6 spd ZF. Don’t they come with the 3.5L petrol V8?

Anyone at the Flagstaff Outdoor Expo this weekend? Please post pics!

I had never been there before, I don’t like crowds. I came at Unicat’s request. It sure seemed like a lot of people to me!! I left Sunday at noon. As far “not the least intention of overlanding”, I can testify personally that’s incorrect in my case with a 4.8m (16’) Unicat on my 05 U500. Before...

    Acela 4x4 Moab Project

I heard <$1M, specifically $830-930K for Brilliant depending on rigid vs hinged roof. The 3000 type axles would be extra probably. I think I saw the tag axle vehicle nearby at the show. I spent quite a bit of time talking to the Krug guy (from near Cherkassy) but not about trucks. More important...

    Acela 4x4 Moab Project

Sorry for the OT post but at Expo West - Re juggernauts, I was at the Unicat exhibit. There was a ~7m camper body with raising roof on 6x6 MAN chassis. I know the owners. They’re working on “Brilliant”, a Ram 5500 with roof that raises slightly so <3.0 m in road position. And a Meritor 3000 axle...

modern diesel for overlanding in developing countries - post your solutions

Were they specific on HOW running high sulfur diesel will damage the engine, even with emissions deleted? By the above I mean clean (no water or actual dirt) high sulfur fuel. I will make a bet that if you really pin them down, they’ll talk about “sulfuric acid buildup in the oil etc”. Which is...

    Going to be Unimoged

The UGN/U500 bodybuilder manual has similar data. Because the cab is carbon fiber, the max cab roof load is 80kg, only 20kg each at 4 specific mounting points. So Unicat built me an aluminum skeleton of a rack with 2 (Al) Zarges boxes. Where I store my 2 ginormous (1.5” and 2”) kinetic tow...

    Rossmonster F550 ER type vehicle

Why? Have you ever seen how much the cab vs rear mounted structure (bed in a pickup or in this case camper body) twist on rough terrain? That’s why there’s a 6” gap.

Did you say wood burning stove? Is there a picture or description somewhere? What about the necessary height of stack?

Going down the rabbit hole...Fuso build

What’s the 1st gear ratio in the Duonic? And axle ratio and proposed tire size. As a very general approximate rule, you want at least 40:1 (trans x TC x diff) in lowest gear, for a “light” vehicle with ~32” tires. Lower is better especially for heavily loaded or bigger vehicles - like camping...
