    On-Island XJ Build

My vinyl armrest repair looks ok. It'll get the job done but its not great looking. I used construction adhesive (Premium PL because I had it on hand) to glue the foam and vinyl onto the plastic armrest and then wrapped it up in electrical tape. The electrical tape has stretch to it, so I...

    On-Island XJ Build

I finished the armrest vinyl repair and installation of the Dynamat in the driver's side door. I haven't driven the car yet so I don't have any final conclusions on the Dynamat, except that I dread the next time I need to do a repair inside the car door. Here's the final result: The door...

    On-Island XJ Build

Dynamat scraps installed inside the door cavity already seem to make a difference when the door closes. Thanks JSwanson! I’ll take a look at the transmission mount.

Stoked about the new Gofast camper

It makes a ton of sense that the tent structure itself is enough for mounting, that's great. I couldn't find dimensions anywhere, did I miss them? My XJ suffers (benefits?) from being short and narrow, so most hard shell RTTs overhang the roof area.

    On-Island XJ Build

Hey Gordo, yes, I'm going to try and fix it. The entire interior door card (panel?) is sold as one part and it's strikes me as too wasteful to scrap the whole thing over a little piece of vinyl. You lucked out with a good trade. The arm rest is attached to the panel with what look like...

    On-Island XJ Build

Thanks Ray, I really appreciate that! I'm trying to keep it simple, clean and robust. The trip went well, no issues. The drive-line vibration was still there but I notice it less. I can't say if it's improved or I'm just getting used to it. One takeaway: the XJ is loud at speed. Living on a...

Stoked about the new Gofast camper

This looks killer. Cheers. Glad to hear you'll be selling a tent-only option. What do you think the tent only option will weigh? Also, is the translucent roof strong enough to stand on?

    rear bumper ski rack ideas

I'm only 5'9" and my primary skis are 186 cm = over six feet long. If I mounted skis on the rear of my Jeep XJ and didn't let them hang any lower than the bumper, then they would stick out waaay above the roof line. Maybe you could get away with it by mounting them diagonally, but I agree with...

On the history of automotive-safety, and inside-the-cab modifications

All these first-hand accounts are helping the realization sink in and I'm going to be far more careful about items in the cab, even small ones, loose and mounted. You guys seem to agree with the premise, but am I wrong that this safety consideration doesn't seemed to be discussed as much as...

On the history of automotive-safety, and inside-the-cab modifications

I listened to a fascinating podcast over the weekend from "99% Invisible," a nerdy and interesting design-podcast. This particular episode is called "The Nut Behind the Wheel" https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/nut-behind-wheel/ and discusses the history of safety and design in the...

Got rust? I do...and need your help!

There's no substitute for elbow grease. I don't have the tools/skills for metal work either, but managed to stave off rust on my '97 XJ that has lived in the northeast its whole life: rust spots above the windshield and along the drip-rail of the roof, mostly. I used fiberglass reinforced body...

    Project Overlander-Build Thread

There are browser extensions that can fix the photo bucket issues. I use Chrome and it worked like a charm: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/photobucket-hotlink-fix/kegnjbncdcliihbemealioapbifiaedg

    Flatlanders Go West

Seems like a great trip and wanted to give a nod to the XJ. Cheers.

Why don’t more people take the WK2 overlanding?

The only off-road driving I've done in my '14 WK2 limited is in the sand and I didn't think it performed well. The sand terrain mode just seems to slow the application of power to the wheels in order to keep the driver from digging themselves in deeper by spinning the wheels, but it also robs...

    On-Island XJ Build

Thanks Mod7x and Mitch502, ROKTAXI I'm taking the jeep off-island this weekend for the first time in a long time and will log 200+ highway miles. I'll be listening to the drive-line closely. What's interesting is that I only notice the vibration/rumble immediately after I let off the...

    On-Island XJ Build

I've now had a few months to drive the lifted jeep and it's great. Funny though, how I now notice new things that need fixing! I'm glad to have the JKS disconnects on the front sway bar and have left the rear sway bar off entirely, but I think I might put it back on because most of my off-road...

    On-Island XJ Build

The tailbone comes with a bracket for mounting the license plate on the spare tire, but it doesn't look very good. A friend suggested I simply offset the license plate on the tailgate, to the right hand side , where it would still be under the tailgate handle trim. He noticed that by mounting...

    On-Island XJ Build

On the rear end, I had previously installed a Detours Off-Road "Tailbone" rear bumper and tire carrier, but never repainted the bumper, nor did I ever permanently install the tire carrier arm. That's now complete and it adds functionality while maintaining the stock look:

    On-Island XJ Build

A few cosmetic odds and ends came next: reinstalled the repainted OME fender flares and front bumper end caps. I had long since removed the front air dam and spray guard fabric thingy underneath the front end, so I trimmed the bumper ends caps for better clearance. This is in keeping with the...
