    "Noise Cameras" for loud pipes?

Vaguely familiar. Back in the 70s I was looking for weird Doctor Demento type stuff, Frank Zappa, Velvet underground, the Ramones, etc. I remember being in the pickup truck age 11 and hearing a band called the Beetles on AM. I remember thinking- what a weird name, they named themselves after...

    "Noise Cameras" for loud pipes?

30 years driving 18; you could see em coming in the mirrors- you could never hear em coming

    "Noise Cameras" for loud pipes?

Hey, you guys talking about music? I listen to just about everything except modern country and rap. Once in a while a smooth unoffensive hip hop tune may work its way unto my 8,000 song playlist. Inevitably I continue to enjoy old fashioned acid rock concept albums, old classic Rock, from...

    Gladiator - Good/Bad?

Me too. Jeeps aren’t bad, or worse vehicles than LCs, just different. We loved our 04 Rubicon. It took us a lot of places. I did everything possible to increase the GVWR and the comfort levels up to where we needed it for long distance on & off grid touring. I’m pretty sure that had the...

    Gladiator - Good/Bad?

Yes, a rarity, however, the WJ platform does come to the closest to an 80 series, because it has a solid front axle. Albeit a Dana 30, and if you’re lucky a Dana 44 out back. Most came through with Dana 35s in the rear. The 80 has axles that are rated in between the 44s & 60s and they are...

    Gladiator - Good/Bad?

I get that Dan. Fuel can be quite expensive, but I do have good range, 500+ miles, thanks to a 25 gallon auxiliary tank, and the ability to carry 10 more gallons in jerry cans if ever needed. When my brother-in-law makes fun of me for the poor fuel mileage, I remind him I’m not making $600 a...

    Part time 4WD

Positives: the truck handles much better, no more understeer when cornering at highway speeds. We no longer listen to the front diff being noisy. By modest calculations roughly 1/4 gallon better MPG. Negatives: with the kit I used the 80 no longer has ABS, not a negative in my mind. Also...

    Gladiator - Good/Bad?

You state that Toys aren’t as “beefy” as jeeps after the early 80s. I don’t know man, I’ve owned both and the 96 FZJ I have now is a whole lot beefier ( axles rated at 1ton ) than any Jeep I’ve ever been under. I’ve sprung it properly for overlanding and now have a 7,250lb GVWR. I think the...

    Gladiator - Good/Bad?

1FZ Fe 4.5 petro. It gets horrible fuel mileage- 11-12 mpg loaded on a good day. However, with 371,000 miles on the original drive train, it just keeps on going & going. The 4.5 has had the head off once, for valve stem seals, cleaned up and reassembled at 292,000. Most Americans are power...

    Gladiator - Good/Bad?

I was hoping you might chime in as you have had great experiences with your jeeps. Your current set up is fantastic. And, so is our 80 series, which by all accounts is a plush version of the 76 series. It seems I’m in the minority here in the states, preferring a tractor. Have a great day &...

    Gladiator - Good/Bad?

I’m willing to bet a months retirement check that had the 70 series Landcruiser been allowed in the US decades ago, Jeep would no longer exist. I had a 75CJ, a 98 TJ, an 04 Rubicon, a gasser Liberty and a diesel Liberty. The 04 Rubi was by far and away the pinnacle of the Jeep brand. It was...

Upgrade my Subaru Outback or trade it in?

If I were younger, I’d hold out with the Subaru until the new Landcruisers are available. Then I’d buy one knowing it’ll carry more than 1200 lbs and last a half million miles, if not more, then build it out over time to suit our needs & wants. I’d love to get one of the new LCs, but as...

    The Status of Overlanding Today

I figure the darth Vader grills are for people that really don’t like their Jeeps and are trying to make it something that it is not. Sometimes I miss our old TJ, then we go out in the 80 and I don’t feel so bad

    The Status of Overlanding Today

Yup- you are. There is no way an overlander would even consider a wide open jeep for anything long range. It’s only “fun” for maybe the first 100 miles or so. We had a ragtop TJ for a while, not only was it extremely uncomfortable, after 4 or 5 days of clipping off 4 or 5 hundred miles a day...

How many of you ACTUALLY overland with your 80s or 60s

The years long string ( about 2006 to present) of very bad ford diesel engines in the e350 ford vans and F350 ( and larger) trucks were built by the International Harvester Corporation- IH, the same company that still builds International Trucks. IH also built Farmall Tractors from the early...

How many of you ACTUALLY overland with your 80s or 60s

Just read this today. Once anyone actually uses a wagon for overlanding, they become acutely aware of the shortcomings of a pick up truck, unless you step up to a full size with SFA. Even then, one is very limited with a full size and about the only way to make the living/sleeping/ kit area...

Outstanding video comparing wide versus narrow tires

Because they don’t really go anywhere cept the mall. That’s why they are nicknamed mall krawlers. Fat tires are just plain stupid and have no practical use for overlanders.

    Part time 4WD

Abs Absolutely agree. Even though mine is an automatic, which I’ve gotten used to, there isn’t a known failure of the A343F under normal use. Ya, guys have blown them up because they lacked mechanical sympathy and beat them, but under normal finesse style driving? No failures. As far as...

    Part time 4WD

It’s hard to tell, in spite of over 6,000 miles traveled in the past month. The quality of gasoline differs immensely. Ethanol gas equals poor mpgs. Gas available on the Dempster is even poorer. Over all? Previous trips we average 11. We are averaging 11-12 mpgs on this tour. So maybe 1/2...

Is the roof tent trend over?

Ours did great in 50 mph plus, wind gusts in the Staircase last spring. No rips, no tears, slept like a log. Did great the year before on Kelly’s Point in heavy winds. So windy each time I hooked up the trailer in case the wind became so heavy it would topple us. You must have had an el-cheapo.
