Not sure about the engine, (I was never into BMW or that kind of cars anyhow), but the transmission is a ZF 8 speed, widely used in the US truck / SUV market. The RAM 1500 and the gas 2500 use that transmission and it's the least complained about part in the truck.

The Defender never had it and probably the Grenadier did not put it for the same reason. The Rang Rover Classic had one and we loved it! After the hunt or hike we would sit on and have a snack or tea. Something simple and yet 100% functional.

My understanding is that this car is a German engineered. The Germans never were into flexing axles. The G wagon is a perfect example of it. Maybe the same mode of thinking / design went in this car too? The G wagon and the Grendier do share the same design office.
