Need recommendations for a family vehicle.

Did anyone mention a Suburban or Yukon XL yet? Seriously though, get it and don't look back.

Scangauge II Transmission fluid temp in GMT-800 truck?

I will look at it when I get home today... I think I remember having to type the codes over again, so maybe it was for that reason... That is exactly where I put it. I put some velcro in the pocket, and it has now been there for at least 4 years. Almost looks stock!

Scangauge II Transmission fluid temp in GMT-800 truck?

I have a 2004 Suburban 1500 4x4 LS and have a ScanGauge II and having the TFT is great. I believe all GM Vehicles pre-2004 were VPW. 2004 and after can be both VPW or CANSF, so maybe try doing the CANSF codes?.. or there is a way to check which mode the ScanGauge is sensing in the settings...

    Brake shields

That settles it, I like my fish seared, so I am going to keep them off! Will just have to check the brakes after every water crossing.

    Jerry cans, which to choose?

PepBoys has the Spectre Civilian style plastic ones in Red, Yellow and Blue (marked potable water). They are $20-30 and you can use a 30% off coupon they have perpetually on their website. For less then $20 bucks each I can't beat that. I've had a few of mine for over 3 years worth of trips...

    Brake shields

The vehicle I have is a 2004 Suburban 1500 4x4, but this question can relate to many different vehicles. When I put on a new larger rear axle, the shippers bent the brake shields so that they dragged against the disk. As such they are bent back, but always bothered me so I took them off. I am...

Reliability Toyota --- Coming from a Land Rover Owner

You could probably do absolutely no preventative maintenance on the Cruiser, and still have better mission critical reliability than an equivalent Land Rover with more than average maintenance. Not saying this is something you should do, but they really are in completely different leagues. As...

    2002 Suburban 4x4 z71 G80 Adeventuremobile/home/photostudio

Before going just now with the 6 inch, I had 2" spacers in the back and they worked great, just be careful with the torsion crank in the front, too much and suspension (CV/balljoint) wear rate will be much faster, along with depending on how serious the offroading is, and your right foot, chance...

    Is my ScanGauge toast?

+1 for Scangauge's product and their customer service. I cannot speak highly enough of them, I had a similar malfunction 4 years after purchase and they fixed it. Went out and bought two more soon after for my other cars.

    2001 Suburban 1500 for towing?

+1 to this. I am anticipating my 4l60e going out in the next 50k miles and have extensively looked into it. It is not a "direct swap, but if you can do your own work, getting a low mileage 4L80e, and the parts, will be a little more $ than a rebuilt or low mileage 4l60e if you search around for...

    2001 Suburban 1500 for towing?

Ah, I think you're right with the distinction between the tahoe and suburban. Now remembering, (and reading) I remember the first time I changed the rear brakes on the burb, the socket size for the caliper was a different size than the youtube video I had watched which i think was for a Tahoe...

    2001 Suburban 1500 for towing?

I personally have never heard of the "upgraded brakes" on a 1500. I would assume that "F" is an internal GM indicator because the same frame or hubs or something in some applications could have had drums in the rear (Silverado 1500 or some Suburbans in some markets may have had them). (edit-...

    2001 Suburban 1500 for towing?

Also, to get a transmission temp gauge, a good bluetooth reader will send it to an android with the Torque app. However, I recommend a scangauge 2(~$100 from Pepboys) to have a permanent temperature gauge and not rely for such a critical system on your phone, which might not always be to that...

    2001 Suburban 1500 for towing?

I have been towing a 6000 pound race trailer with my suburban now for a few years with the exact same trim. I have had no problems. As people have indicated the transmission is the weak spot. I upgraded the transmission cooler to a larger b&m cooler and added an e fan to the cooler with a 180...

Got my new-to-me rig: '04 Suburban 1500 LT...

+1, what he said. Check it ALL. Anything that is surface rust, brush it down and treat it. Anything that looks more than surface rust, cut it out, repair it, and cover it in POR15. (Also can use POR15 on the surface rust as well.) Even though I'm in CA, I go through the udnerside of the truck...

Got my new-to-me rig: '04 Suburban 1500 LT...

I've got a matching 04 in Black. It' been the best car I have ever owned. I've been meaning to do a build thread, but most of the mods you mentioned, I've been through. The scangauge is key, being able to see the Transmission Temp for the 4l60E is important. I also wired a E fan to the...

    10 bolt or 14 bolt

HAHAHA I say the same thing. 300k and it will get a junkyard 5.3 with 100k on it and be good for another 200k. Been meaning to change the original hoses, powersteering pump and water pump, but I think I'm just gonna wait until 300k... The suburban has been by far the most reliable car or truck...

    10 bolt or 14 bolt

Agree, after reading more, looks like the 10 bolts isn't as strong as I thought (always thought it was just the G80 in the 10 bolt that had problems, but after research, it is actually the axle itself.) Agree, I had concurrently owned two (just sold my 6.0 that had 200k and was just like the...
