Three months in the NW with 2 dogs and a cat in a van

Montana on my mind Hebgen Lake is just ten miles outside of West Yellowstone in the Gallatin National Forest and covers 12,350 acres. It’s full of heron, cranes, ducks and fishermen on lightweight inflatable pontoons. Highway 20 heads west and just before you hit the KOA campground you need to...

Three months in the NW with 2 dogs and a cat in a van

Thanks but I missed this. I'm in Jackson now doing laundry and procrastinating. I found good dispersed camping about 20 miles south of here on FS 30530, long deep canyon with a river, good views and huge campsite areas. Really sweet. If i dont find another for tonight then I'll be there later!

Three months in the NW with 2 dogs and a cat in a van

Good days and bad days We woke up as the sun came over the snow capped mountains. I opened the doors and Harold and Rosie ran outside to sniff and pee next to Elk River, full of snowmelt and tree trunks flashing past our campsite. The sun warms me as I set up the coffee and light a fire. The...

Three months in the NW with 2 dogs and a cat in a van

Steamboat springs and Elk River road for now. The dispersed camping is along nf400, about 30 miles from town. Snowing a couple of miles past my campsite. All the pets are relaxed after a couple of days walking and napping. We're off to Dinosaur NP on the way to Wyoming. My goal is to be in...

Three months in the NW with 2 dogs and a cat in a van

Taking Cat Stephen for a ride, I couldn't get anyone to stay with him so the little bugger is now an honorary dirt road and dogger… Day one in the van with two dogs and a cat went surprisingly smoothly. The first mile out of my place is dirt road, shaking up the van nicely, and Stevie was...

Any tips on driving a 2wd van?

Hi BSK, Thanks for letting me know I"m not the only one! I did love the van at Expo as it was so stupidly windy and we stayed cosy inside each night. Mostly for me too it's getting to campsites, having an enclosed space for when we're in bear country, and comfort, much better than the 4Runner...

Any tips on driving a 2wd van?

Thanks, luckily it is only 15 ft long and yes, I got some traction aids too. A come-along is in my budget so that is next. You mentioned a lift, would that change steering or anything else? Someone suggested getting suspension rated for a 3/4 or 1 ton as this is the smaller 1/2 ton...and that...

Any tips on driving a 2wd van?

Okay, hitting the road tomorrow, a slow meander to Expo, taking a few days to drive 450 miles! First time out in the van so we won't be far off the highway 60, probably Quemado Lake, NM to start with. It'll be interesting! Then back for a week after that to fix screens and get the AT tires, a...

Any tips on driving a 2wd van?

Yep, good reminder. I think with the tires for better traction and stopping to check out the road conditions is a good idea. I've been getting a little over confident in the Rover and 4Runner so this will be a good attitude adjustment. I'll be at Expo and thought I'd wander round and talk to the...

Any tips on driving a 2wd van?

THanks fellas. My neighbor Pete suggested bringing the snow chains for mud but, yeah, just be aware and don't push it. It's true, all these years of driving a 4x4, I rarely had to use it. The van has good clearance and I reckon with good tires, we'll be set. Thanks again, s and it looks like...

Any tips on driving a 2wd van?

Hi folks, I'm the new owner of a 2003 Dodge B1500 conversion van. It's been a long time since I've had a 2wd and so I thought I would ask for your help! Mostly the upcoming trip will be on small local highways from NM to the NW over 3 months, taking it slow. I like to camp in the forests...

Thanks, good information. It gives me hope for the longer term ability of what and where we can go in the van. I'll check in with the other thread/ forum section too. Appreciate the help.

    2WD Overland Thread

Good thread. I usually head out into the mountains in my old 4Runner, camp in the back, hang out by lakes, hike with pups, that kind of thing. Explore out of curiosity. I have 4x4s because I live in the mountains and need it in winter to get home in snow and in summer getting home in the...

"We Got You Covered" Awning Sale At OK4WD Until 5/14

This 49” awning would fit the length of the stock rack on my 95 4Runner. The rails/runners are only 55” long from the back door to the hatchback. http://store.arbusa.com/ARB-Awning-1250-ARB3110A-P3655.aspx These are the mounting brackets they send but I don't see how that would...
