Why F-550 instead of F-450 chassis cab?

Why do medium duty, high end Expedition vehicles like EarthRoamer LTS start with an F-550 instead of an F-450 chassis cab? I thought the only difference between the two was the suspension but builders replace all the components anyway. What am I missing? Thanks!

    Extreme use Earthroamer

If you watch videos on EarthRoamer, you will see the interior is all high end luxury so that part of the high cost. Also, there are “Super C” RVs out there made by more high volume companies that are built on commercial truck chassis that should provide the same durability for less extreme dirt...

    Extreme use Earthroamer

EarthRoamer trucks are a luxury for sure. On the luxury spectrum, I consider them more practical than most and when you look at the craftsmanship and build quality, at least you can see where your money went.

    Extreme use Earthroamer

In my opinion, the tires on EarthRoamers are a bit too knobby considering most owners probably spend 99% of their mileage on paved roads. However, I have been on long dirt roads remote areas that span hundreds of miles and beat the hell out of vehicles. I see trips along roads that would destroy...

Ford F550 Flatbed Build for Existing Truck Camper (Driven to Adventures)

I assumed from your post that you were going to fabricate the bed yourself, (unfortunately I don’t have that skill). I was just thinking you could copy design elements that you liked from the website. Since you got a quote, mind if I ask what ballpark they are in? They don’t post prices but I...

Ford F550 Flatbed Build for Existing Truck Camper (Driven to Adventures)

SherpTek designed a nice flatbed system that is camper compatible. If you haven’t already looked, I think it would be worth checking out the pictures on their website for ideas.

Looks like the F550 will come in 6.7 and 7.3

    Safety concerns of global trips

I have a lot of international travel experience including Central America. Regardless of anecdotal stories on Internet forums, the risk is higher traveling south of the US border, (Costa Rica is probably an exception). Exotic expedition vehicles are more likely to attract attention from thieves...

My new camper and truck ready for gnarly dirt roads

That’s the first time I have seen a trailer hitch lifting the tow vehicle. Amazing

Changing my truck camper from slide in to flatbed...

I have seen pictures of flat bed set ups where the sides are storage boxes with access doors. I did a google search of “truck camper flatbed storage” and found several pictures. Also this thread might have useful info: https://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/28485178/print/true.cfm

Based on the YouTube videos and pictures I have seen, I agree about the counters on Northern Lite campers. Have you considered an epoxy coat like this? You wouldn’t have to tear out the old ones and you could practice on a piece of plywood.

If money was no object, I’d get an Earth Roamer....

If the moderators want to move it, that’s fine. I thought that the earth Roamer build knowledge in this sub forum was more applicable.

If money was no object, I’d get an Earth Roamer....

But, Since my budget doesn’t support and my off-road needs don’t require Earth Roamer capabilities, I’m looking at other options. I didn’t want to thread jack but my situation is very similar to vanaddict’s “ready to make a larger commitment” thread. I want to explore North America on 98% paved...

    2020 EarthCruiser?

Maybe this is an ignorant question, but any possibility of Earth Roamer offering a 7.3 gasoline option? Depending on the numbers when Ford releases it, it seems like it could be a practical alternative for traveling in countries without the ultra low sulfur diesel. I know there are emission...

I really like this set up, hoping to get something similar in a couple years. Hopefully Northern Lite will still make a premium version of the camper like the limited edition.

    Fiberglass truck camper build

Are you going to wrap the whole camper or just add graphics? Have you checked into how difficult they might be to remove in the future? I have been wondering why more people don’t wrap their campers in vinyl. It seems like it could help seal up a lot of potential water leaks.

    Kimbo Campers

It looks like this unit here: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Toshiba-5-000-BTU-115-Volt-Window-Air-Conditioner-RAC-WK0511CMU/303408320 From the picture, it seems to be mounted facing the truck cab with a little space on either side but it definitely seems inefficient. Not only does the airflow...

    Epoxy over canvas siding?

Lots of good ideas to look into. Thanks a lot! Ahh.. FG=fiberglass, I’m an idiot

    Epoxy over canvas siding?

What is FG? I was thinking that if I had a solid structure with a wood frame, the canvas would just need to be waterproof and wouldn’t provide any strength so maybe just an oil based paint would be better?
