    Front recovery Disco I

Never had a problem with the forged hook and keeper, though anything can fail or misbehave given the right mix of bad conditions. Assuming that one is using a nicer strap where the loop is doubled-over and covered with some sort of abrasion-resistant covering, the odds of the pictured "oops"...

    Jack suggestions?

OK, now I know what I'm getting myself for Christmas...and the Hi-Lift can go back in the garage. Out of curiosity, what is a fair price for one of these?

Convert my M1 Garand? .308 vs .30-06 thoughts

Another vote for '06. Unless you had some compelling reason to standardize with .308 to go along with your M1A and FAL collection, I'd go with a new 30-06 barrel. Its a great caliber, easy to find, and you can find decent surplus of CMP ammo at a fair price.

    Undecided on Auxiliary Lighting

The FF1000s are OK, but not anywhere near exciting with the 55w bulbs in 'em; I think I liked the 500 series driving light better, honestly. I've got a pair of 968s still in the box, waiting to be swapped into the Hella's current position.

How many have Stingers on the Front

Don't know that I'd count as an experienced expedition person, but this is a free site and in life you generally get what you pay for, so here's my take: On a competition rockcrawling rig, I could possibly see the point of the stinger (though admittedly not of the competition rockcrawling...

    Snow chains on 4 x 4 trucks.

I've wondered the exact thing, having successfully navigated roads after snowfalls of sufficient depth to end up ripping my exhaust apart at the one clamped union in an otherwise welded system. Guess I gotta go out west some winter and check it out myself...

Upper Peninsula Overland Adventure Weekend August 23rd-24th

I would definitely be game for another trip through the UP, across the northern shore of Lake Superior, and/or something along the lines of the Georgian Bay trip that AlekG did. James Bay would be an interesting group trip, too. I'd also suggest that the powers that be might wish to add a...

    China Head Mountain trip completed

BCEx: Very nice rear rack setup!! I'd be interested to know what sort of competitive price you had in mind before I go buy more steel and fire up the welder. Particularly after nearly losing some of my strapped-down stuff when I accidentally got a bit airborne on the dunes... EdB: The...

    Toyota Ball Joint Spacers!

At the UPOverland event this past weekend, I was the recipient of a voucher for a pair of Ball Joint Spacers for 86-95 Toyota 4wd (4runner and Pick up) in the raffle that was part of the event. These were donated to the raffle by Frank (elripster), who the manufacturer/purveyor of various...

Upper Peninsula Overland Adventure Weekend August 23rd-24th

For anyone who has ever presumed to judge Michigan's level of desirability as a travel destination based solely upon time spent in the major metro areas of the state (Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo/Battle Creek), this trip confirms that there is far more interesting stuff...

    ruffled feathers

Without a doubt. But doesn't it get excessive at some point? I know I spend hours on this site every day here at work, buying things and envisioning changes and "upgrades" that I "need to make," and have yet to get a proper camping weekend in all year? Seems somewhat out of balance...

    ruffled feathers

I guess it all comes down to what you're aiming to do! My argument in favor of maintaining as much stock stuff as possible has always been one of resupply, not inherent superiority of OEM stuff. After driving an MG when I was younger, I got tired of having to mail order all my parts, or having...

Towing with a TJ or LJ....

My 2c: I tow a lot with my TJ, at or above capacity. Loads of logs, soil, gravel, mulch, you name it. The rated receiver hitch is nice, but it's nothing special, really. Just welded steel. It would not be difficult to build a bumper that mounted to the rear cross member AND to the sides of...
