Re-Gearing is needed if you run larger diameter tires. I am unfamiliar with what the stock tire diameter was for that vehicle.

Generally you do not want to run dual batteries when winching. Theory is you isolate you primary (starting) battery and winch with your secondary. That way if you kill the winch battery, you can still start vehicle and re-charge the winch battery.

Smittybilt is showing these off at 4Wheel Drive TruckFest events. I saw it here in Dallas. It seems they were trying to hit a price point, rather than make the ultimate trailer. Most of what you see is priced ala cart. Seemed to have reasonable features and construction for most folks needs.
The early ones made in 1985 (my 86 was made in October 1985) will have a AMC 20. Not sure exactly when they switched to Dana 44, but obviously it was sometime after this.
