I agree with your thoughts and even on my Conqueror, the put up time is a pain. My Flippac solves most of these issues except - roof load. I miss throwing kayaks, bikes, firewood and wet stuff on the truck cap's roof. I still have to pack up to drive anywhere, but it's a 1 min deal after moving...
I was going to add, (never owned a D1 or D2) but I have read they get LC80 mileage not 4Runner mileage, if you hated the 4Runner MPG, I think the LR will eat at you....

When I bought mine used, that is what we did. long 2x4s front and rear, remember the front is MUCH heavier because of the overhang. 4 of us had no problem. Just make sure those in teh back don't lift too quick or high and throw off the front's balance.
I think I have the 12x16. It's easy to deploy. Re-fold it in the yard before you go. Laid out, the long side has 2 seams that line up with the edges of the tent, fold each side over in thirds and roll up. After you set up the tent, stand on the kitchen side wheel well and "throw" the roll over...
In one way it makes sense... any replacement will be a major change (safety/and much less so, environmental) I have always hated the Big 3 keep bringing back old names with boring cars - starting with the Mustang II. If it's not a Defender, move on, call it something new. But Dendy I agree, Sad...
