    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Kind of hard to see, but there's a vacuum valve up there that.... opens the fresh air? Not sure, but the path way out of the cowl area is pretty significant. The backup would seem to occur where the main body meets the firewall, down below there's only a bit of a slit for the water to pass...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

There's definitely a channel between the windshield frame and cowl, so I think windshield water shouldn't be a problem. I'd love to put a GoPro in there, button it all up and hit it with a hose to see just how much water actually collects...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Back at it! Well, finally had a fairly free day, so after doing a bit of yard work and a little bit of tidying up I was able to get on thing checked off the list and one thing almost checked off. They're little, but they're a start. It definitely is nice to be able to just go, "I'm gonna work on...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Well, not a whole lot to report at the moment. Still getting settled into the new place, and the last few weekends have been busy with friends' weddings and other gatherings. My dad is coming out for another wrench session before Thanksgiving. I have the week off so that should be some solid...

    GMRS Recommendation

Gotcha... I was guessing since their page doesn’t list band info or highlight any PTT feature outside the phone integration. I did think the new FRS data rules had duration and frequency limits. I’d be curious to see If they actually have an FCC ID yet.

    GMRS Recommendation

So, these are like the goTenna. They function on the MURS channels where data is allowed pretty much unrestricted, and no license is required. There doesn't appear to be an actual walkie-talkie feature... I have no idea why they look like handheld radios... But yeah, they seem very similar...

Super curious to see that. Got a link?

    GMRS Recommendation

Yeah, I was surprised when I found those! REALLY wish FCC would allow it to work on non-fixed antenna radios as well. Think about having your kids not even need to key-up to check for the tail on the repeater... if they beaconed their location and didn't hear a beacon back from a designated...

    GMRS Recommendation

Yeah, I get that it isn't hard (ham myself, number of different radios, familiar with Chirp), but, just another thing to have to figure out... just saying... You're right about handhelds mostly not doing repeaters... the Baofeng GMRS radio I mentioned does have repeater channels. I kind of see...

    GMRS Recommendation

Oh... and I'd LOVE to see Midlands or someone come out with a plug-n-play Part 95 repeater. The really interesting thing is that Midlands' MXT400 radio is just a custom-programmed, rebadged Baofeng BF-9500 (or whatever generic Chinese radio Baofeng is using...) that's been sent through the Part...

    GMRS Recommendation

Yeah, that's why I called it a grey area... GMRS has so many weird grandfather'd in stuff its pretty hard to know who's operating on what and if they're legit or not... FCC has even stated they're aware people are using Part 90 gear extensively and ... ? So yeah... for me, getting GMRS certified...

    GMRS Recommendation

With GMRS my feeling is just K.I.S.S. and stick with GMRS specific radios. Everything suggested thus far are business band radios. Besides being a grey zone of legality, they'd require programming to work on GMRS. A GMRS certified radio will require 0 setup. dreadlocks is right about mobile...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Probably be one of the last things to go on... lots of electrical to do and that'll be a lot easier with it off...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Alright... snug as a bug in a rug! It looks tight, and it is, but there's definitely space to work. There'll be a fair amount of junk moving out of those storage racks in the next month which will make things a bit more open. Overall the process was pretty easy. It took a little bit of...

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

It is definitely tight, but with the RTT off the rack should clear by a couple inches. If need be I'd definitely be able to get it in with some normal size wheels and tires like we did to get it on the trailer. Those are both ours, but they're just overhead covers with gravel underneath. :(...

The Tahoe will stay as taught as possible until the last minute as a backup anchor point... but it's a REALLY nice Tahoe... definitely not gonna be pushing anything with it. ;)

    The Camp 4x4 Bus - 1973 Suburban 8.1 Swap & Build

Whoop whoop! Well, I finally got the truck out of the shop down in Gilroy and into my driveway in up-country Sutter Creek. While it was awesome having a great place to work on this project, I'm really excited to get the truck in my own garage! I almost didn't think it was going to happen for...
