Mormon Lake Lodge is on private property, but we are conforming with Forest Service regulations, so no open ground fires. Fire pans, charcoal barbecues, gas fires, etc. are okay. There are a whole bunch of outstanding vehicles rolling in here by the minute . . .

If you're driving north on I-17 from Phoenix, there's a shortcut to the event if you get off at Munds Park and head east from there. That road is dirt, but no trouble for a sedan. The other, scenic route would be to take the Beeline Highway (87) through Payson, Pine, and Strawberry, then north...

Is Mali off limit to overlanders now?

Two things to keep in mind: 1. It's the State Department's job to be pessimistic and paranoid. 2. It's every new agency's job to sensationalize the news. We were just in Egypt when U.S. news agencies were reporting Cairo was "in flames," and the State Department had warned all of us to keep...

We'll be debuting a very promising pop-top sleeping system for the 80-Series Land Cruiser at this year's Expo, from Campteq in Colorado. Clamps to the rain gutters; access is either from inside through the front or rear sunroof, or from the outside. Very low highway profile.

Lance, I just talked to Ron and they do have a few books along ("About six of each, I think."). I'd catch them early then . . .

Ron and Viv are in the midst of a circumnavigation, but in addition to their scheduled presentations they have reserved a booth. I'll check to see if they'll have books. It will be great to meet them in person; they're hugely respected and liked.

There's an Alaskan camper looking semi forlorn in a yard on the east side of Lake Mary Road as you head out of Flagstaff toward the Expo venue at Mormon Lake Lodge. Maybe the current owner would be glad to see it go for 50 bucks. Or maybe not. Looking forward to seeing you too, Lance.

    Fuel MPG

It's difficult to get honest mpg numbers out of people, but I included some carefully documented figures from a Cummins-powered Dodge equipped with a Four Wheel Camper here: Speed versus economy Brian DeArmon just got back from installing trail cameras in the Sierra Madre with his Dodge and...

Superwinch Husky - disected, mods, why use a slow worm winch?

You lucked out on the price of the winch. Why not invest in a high-quality synthetic line for it? It's lighter, easier to handle, and safer. Call Thor at Viking; he'll get you exactly what that winch needs.

Marmot tents ? And what we ended up with

I'll look forward to a report on the Kodiak - good luck with it!

TrekPak on Kickstarter. Customizable case and pack storage.

I have a set on the way to test, designed for a Pelican 1550 case. I like the concept a lot - the standard Velcro adjustments to case inserts are always a pain. I hope to have a review up in the next online Overland News.

Marmot tents ? And what we ended up with

When I take down our Turbo Tent in a wind, I leave the corners staked out until it's collapsed. That helps a lot. I don't know of any big tent that's easy to handle in a stiff breeze - or many small tents for that matter. The best I had was my old Taku - you pounded in its three stakes, then...

Marmot tents ? And what we ended up with

When we got the Turbo Tent it was brand new on the market, so did not compare. I've seen one Black Wolf version, which looked equivalent to me at a glance, but I haven't seen a Jet Tent in person. Boom.

Marmot tents ? And what we ended up with

If I'm not mistaken the Jet Tents are Turbo Tents. Either made by them for Oz Tent, produced under license, or simply cloned. As are the Black Wolf versions. But I can't speak to the specific quality control of the Jet Tents.

Marmot tents ? And what we ended up with

Kifaru tents are extremely high quality, but simply bonkers expensive, and their occupancy ratings are a joke. I tested a "six-man" model which made a delightful two-person tent. And they do take a long time to pitch, even with practice. The little folding stove is pretty awesome, though . . ...

Marmot tents ? And what we ended up with

You might also look at the Turbo Tents. Roseann and I have been using one for several years and like it a lot.

Marmot tents ? And what we ended up with

I agree with what's been said so far. Marmot is no longer the stand-out maker of tents (and everything else) they were when I bought my Taku. Today's Chinese-made Marmot tents are more or less interchangeable with those from Mountain Hardwear or a half-dozen other brands. That's not to say...

    Hwange Game Count

Well said, Robbie. This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to conservation and at the same time become immersed in wildlife activity, rather than grabbing glimpses on a short tour.

We have the canvas model. I like the fabric a lot.
