Need to replace my sleeping bag

Yes, absolutely. Every few years a new synthetic will come out with all sorts of claims, all relating to how similar to down it is in loft, durability, and compressibility. Nothing has yet touched down for those qualities, and with the availability of super high-quality European down, the bar...

Need to replace my sleeping bag

A second for Western Mountaineering. In the long run it will be the least expensive bag you'll ever buy, because it will far outlast cheaper bags. Same goes for Feathered Friends (Wiggy's are also excellent). I've always carried down sleeping bags for sea kayaking. There's absolutely no problem...

    Woodlore Buck Saw

The uprights do stay connected to the blade. Once you de-tension it and remove the upper strut, the end pieces fold over the blade and mostly shield the teeth.

    Woodlore Buck Saw

No worries . . . thanks for the link. I think the Woodlore saw carries a bit of a premium thanks to its association with Ray Mears. On the other hand, Ray is one of the few real deals out there in celebrity survival expert land, so he deserves it. Compare his stuff with some of the mediocre...

    Woodlore Buck Saw

Undoubtedly. I do all my own leatherwork. But how many of us have the skills and time to do all these things?

    Woodlore Buck Saw

I have the Woodlore saw and I love it. It's made one at a time by Chris Boyton, an English longbow maker - not often any more you can name who made a piece of your gear. The canvas case that holds a Gransfors Bruks saw is a bonus. I did a writeup here: Woodlore Saw I don't find the vertical...

FJ40 Storage solutions? Post up your pics

At wheel-well height it really doesn't leave room for drawers underneath. But the expanse of flat space on top is really impressive. It's supported and located (well-bolted-down) by aluminum angle iron so the top is flush with the wheel wells. Just behind the seats, where you see the carpet...

FJ40 Storage solutions? Post up your pics

The best, and easiest, modification I made to my FJ40 was a secondary cargo platform at the height of the rear wheel wells. It resulted in a huge, square main cargo area with storage underneath for tents, chairs, and such. I used ten-ply birch plywood and had a section of carpeting trimmed to...

Biological survey in the Sierra Madre Occidental

Thanks, Darin. We're beginning to get back a few conclusions from all the data. So far it looks like at least a half-dozen of the moth species tallied were unknown to science. It gives you some idea of how unexplored Mexico's mountain ranges really are.

Biological survey in the Sierra Madre Occidental

We recently had the chance to assist with a biological survey in Mexico's Sierra Madre Occidental, 120 miles or so south of Douglas, Arizona. A group of about 40 scientists in 15 vehicles headed to a remote property owned by the Catholic church, with the intent of cataloging plants, birds...

    Daily Driving an FJ40

Mine's been my daily driver for, oh, about 30 years now.

Official Overland Expo 2011 thread: Videos, Pictures and Updates

That's an interesting perspective, and one I have not heard before. We had more vendors this year than last, and several of them told me they sold more by Saturday morning this year than they did all weekend last year. I certainly saw a lot of products offered, and a lot of smiling people...

Official Overland Expo 2011 thread: Videos, Pictures and Updates

Those are all excellent points, thanks. Consider the discovery guide done. That's something we can include easily. I also like the two-tier idea. We constantly assess our class offerings to keep the event fresh for return visitors, and raising the bar makes sense. I think you'll like some of...

Official Overland Expo 2011 thread: Videos, Pictures and Updates

Thanks for the input and comments, everyone. Barring some unforeseen calamity, Overland Expo 2012 will definitely be in Amado. Here's why: The event requires a venue that can handle around 2,000 people on a revolving daily basis, that has on-site accommodations for fly-in instructors and...

Great photo, Herbie! We're in the beginning stages of a plan to seed with grass and plumb for sprinklers the entire vendor area next year.

    1984 LC for $2,000 +/-? Should I buy it?

Dave, I agree with those above: If it's mostly rust-free, and the transmission is indeed a factory H55, go for it. Even if the engine is toast, you can buy a good long block for $1200 or so. Since you're in California, I'd also make sure all the emissions equipment is on the engine - that stuff...

Range Rover 1972 Darien Gap Expedition in Octane Magazine, December 2010

I have that issue, and it has some of the best photos I've seen of the Darien Range Rover from the Gaydon museum. Good article as well, although it glosses over the chronic differential problems experienced by the team. Octane is a superb magazine in general.
