Nathan, I'm willing to bet it's the membrane switch that is actually part of the airbag module. Turns out this is a very common failure. For the record, I'm in the same boat...my horn has been stuck "on" since I bought the vehicle. Assuming it is the membrane switch, here are your options...

I have manual hubs, albeit on a Gen 2.5 and not a Gen 3. There is no noticeable difference in fuel economy between having the hubs locked vs unlocked. The only difference one might find with manual hubs is less wear of the axle boots since the axles wont be spinning when unlocked at the hub.

Mine just slid off, too. No puller needed. I wouldn't hit it with a hammer. If it doesn't slide off, spray the area where the balancer fits over the crank nose with penetrant and let it sit for a day.

Not really a solution, but an option: get an UltraGauge, set it to display engine rpm.

I'd be very interested to see if there were any measurable differences in the Ultragauge readings without the hood lift vs with hood lift...an interesting science experiment. You might make me eat my words.

Not to disparage your mod Brian, but I have to agree with jeep on this one that such a gap is good for for venting heat at trail speeds and idle, but can have a negative cooling effect at highway speeds. Like he said, at speed, a gap at the cowl can actually work to pressurize the engine...
